Maybe? Perhaps?

As I was going through my photos, getting ready for book titles, I realized that I do quite a span of editing.

Sometimes I do quite a bit -- layer upon layer, tweaking things as I go. I don't think they're large tweaks, but definitely a lot of tweaks.

Other times, I barely touch them.

This is something that many people have problems with when the first start (and many times people have problems with it through their time on DPC): Just how much editing is done on the pictures??

I would love to start a side challenge that shows before and after on challenge entries for one week (plus one) of challenges. I'm thinking "landscape at night", "single light source", "book titles", and "indoor macro". You don't have to do all three (even if you have entries in all three).

At first I loved the idea. Then I was afraid that people wouldn't want to enter for fear of being DQd (not that they're purposely cheating, but we've all seen what happens when people have posted their steps in the comments section, only to have those comments get them DQd.)

Well -- here's the deal: The top 5 have to validate anyway. If the photo isn't top 5, then here's your chance to know there's a problem before you get a validation request in the future. :)

Though I highly doubt the SC will be skimming this side challenge looking for problems.

So the question is (or maybe the two questions are:)

1. If you are entered in these challenges -- are you interested in showing us your before and after, telling us the steps you used in editing your picts?
2. Should it be on these four challenges, or should it start at a later date? (I thought these four because night landscapes seemed to use different processing steps, single light could be interesting to see how the processing affected the light, book titles because it's there, and indoor macro because it's basic.)

People who are interested are willing to participate:

I may even actually enter a challenge this week. You could add a fourth to this side challenge and include the basic editing Macro at Home (or whatever that one is.)

My editing is almost always very minor, but I did do some tweaking and comparing on the one I may enter, so it may be worth getting the additional feedback on that, and other possible choices. I'll play, if it's OK that I'll probably only have one entry!

Actually, I think this is an excellent idea! You always learn the best tricks from seeing how other people do it.
I couldn't participate because I didn't enter any of the three you mentioned (only macro indoors this week), however if people get involved I will definitely be snooping on this thread.

I really like this idea. My editing skills are pretty limited -- I am not sure people would learn much from it. I entered Landscape and Single Light, and I am debating Book Title. I would participate.

I only entered book title and my edits were fairly small, but this sounds like fun.

I like this idea. My steps are very limited at most times and I always love to read how others got to their final image. However, I am not in any of the challenges you mentioned. I am in 3 upcoming challenges (SOPA, Macro, and FS) that I can do that for. I think I would do it more for getting advice on what I did wrong rather than teach anyone something they didn't already know.

I always list my editing steps anyway ... I might be able to get around to posting some screenshots to show what I've done, although my entries for these particular challenges use pretty simple edits (and not "excellent" photos by DPC standards) ... you might want to delay it one challenge or so as was suggested, to get in a Basic editing challenge. Though, really, there's no reason the thread can't stay open indefinitely -- I'me sure there has been at least one previous thread where people posted Before/After examples of either entries or portfolio images or both.

If you have a really detailed description and relatively unique example of editing, you can consider submitting it to Langdon as an official "How'd They Do That" article and get a free month's membership ...

Count me in Wendy. Good idea. I did not participate in all the challenges you mentioned, but I'll post what I have.

Adding the indoor macro challenge to this --

(I'm starting with a limited number of challenges in hopes that more people participate. But it's good to have a basic editing challenge in there.)

Not sure if anyone cares about my editing steps lol, but I wouldn't mind doing this. I would prefer to start at a later date though.

Great idea, Wendy. The first time I looked at this site was years ago, before I even had an SLR. The first post that even gave me a clue "how things are done" is this one from Judi, because it linked the original. It showed how important post processing can be in making the final image something magical. I'm sure we'll all learn something :-)
