I was wondering if the term "not entered into a previous challenge" means that we cannot use photos that were ones we took that we didn't enter but, are similar to the one that we did enter? By that, I mean...if we took a number of shots and chose one to enter into a previous challenge, does mean that we cannot use the others that we took that are similar to the one we did enter? Have I confused anyone? LOL I'm confused!

My understanding is that you may not enter the exact same shot again.

If you had, for instance, your camera on continuous shooting you could legally enter the shot you took 1/10 of a second before or after the one you entered, and the difference between the one you entered and your best of shot would certainly be minimal.

If that is very useful is another question, but at least you could do it.

(Edit spelling.)

yes, technically it is legal, but I would consider entering a shot very similar to the one already voted on, bad form

As long as it's not exactly the same shot you can enter whatever you want. I've seen multiple ribbons won for very very similar shots so it's not uncommon.

ive got a few of this one but i wont be entering it as voters will if they remember vote you down i think on entering a very similar image as has been said its not in the spirit of things and it should be more about posting hidden gems from the year that you didnt get chance to use

That's my approach. I always have shots I love that didn't fit a challenge. It would be a shame to waste the opportunity on something nearly identical to a known performer. However, if all that matters is winning, no reason you can't do it.

You've all made a lot of sense in your answers and reasonings. I think it's made up my mind for me as to which I'll enter now. :)

Thank you! It's very much appreciated. :)

Specifically, it must be a different image capture. But, it could be the same subject/scene as previously entered. As time goes on, we all develop new and better processing techniques. Sometimes, this progress comes from software improvements. I've gained both types of progress during the past year. The reason to retain RAW images is to afford oneself of the opportunity to improve on a previous effort. It's analogous to printing from a film negative. Do it again. Do it better. Again, not on the same image previously entered, but it's perfectly okay with me to see a fresh take on a wonderful photo session using better stuff. Shouldn't be a voting penalty for this. There's nothing new under the sun, but presentations can be improved upon.

I rather lost my way, photographically, this year, but I decided I needed a kick up the backside so have just rejoined after a few months break; I'm in!

Finally an outlet to vent about that 4.5-year grudge! ;)

Whenever I see this I always question why the person would use what is essentially the same image twice instead of using a new one, even if they do like the image a lot - my view is it's had its turn in a challenge already and it seems rather against the spirit of the challenges to enter it again. Obviously not everyone shares this view though, but I always deduct a couple of points for for lack of originality (if the scene is the same but elements have changed that make it a different image, then I view that differently).

well, if this is a similar subject matter, composition, and processing, but taken on a different occasion (as these two shots hopefully :) have been taken), it is okay, although I personally still would not do it just because I find it boring. I was mostly talking about shots taken literally back to back with each other, in the same session.

+ 1

I could enter several outtakes of this one, but IMHO it doesn't make sense... at least for me.
