Check this out: //blog.patdavid.net/2012/05/slow-light-light-painting.html

Using bulb to paint light into the picture from off camera. The bulb isn't visible though, so you don't get hot spots, you can choose where you'd like the light to be concentrated in the photo!

Yeah it's a fun technique to use, though I've only used it on a single entry. You can also do it with a speedlight, just turn down the power as far as you can and hand hold it, pressing the test button.
You can make your life easier by making small shroud out of cardboard and gaffers tape, or you can use something like cinefoil or whatever else to shape one. Making one will enable you to keep the bulb shielded from the recording medium easier and give you a nice directional source.

A number of folks here on DPC use the technique regularly, and there was a challenge for it, as well, with folks using both "types" of light painting.

I love light painting.
I did this one in your neck of the woods.

It's in Forest Park, a fun place to hike in after dark and do some light painting.

Light painting is a photographic technique in which exposures are made by moving a hand-held light source or by moving the camera. The term light painting also encompasses images lit from outside the frame with hand-held light sources.
