I wish I had the technical know-how to set this up because I really think it is the perfect medicine for all the recent rants etc.

PRETTY PLEASE, if someone smart has the way to set up the math to make this kind of tournament happen I will be eternally grateful.

I remember the days of the very first brand based tourney and the olympics it was fun and the learning curve for people was brilliant. I know it has been asked to death but there must be some kind clever ass soul out there willing to set it up....

Anything I can do to help?

I am not sure how this was normally done, but I have written a small script that retrieve the final score of a challenge and put them into a plain text file together with the userID number (this can be imported into excel or any of those sort of software). I could also put the individual scores together into a global team score (or some other scoring system) once teams are formed.

So in the end, the script can provide the team scores in a rather painless way. I am not sure how the competition is organized, but seems to me that the rest is not very intensive. I had the intention of going through the DPL faq but don't have the time and the rest of the month is quite complicated. Anyway, if somebody found this data as an useful start point I can send it at any time.

That sounds like a plan and THANK YOU. we should chat by PM and set up a game plan and then maybe test it out before we put the whole thing into action..

GREAT NEWS

Sounds like a GREAT idea hope you can get it set up.

I've been working pretty heavily with automation software lately.

I think I could actually automate this entire thing, given a bit of time.

Perhaps we should set up a GoToMeeting and take a look at all of this together?

Epsi, that script sounds really good, and will probably do wonderful, and sounds like it could save us significant effort.

If this is done correctly, it should be easy to ensure this continues to happen for as long as anyone cares to participate. We could even extend it into several different competition leagues, and thereby be able to satisfy several different incompatible requests that have been previously made.

I automated Paul's beat average challenge last year without any issues. Shouldn't be too difficult to automate this. How does it work?

Your methods would probably result in the best overall product, since I was just going to create a automated thread-posting system.

I'd personally love to see what you'd come up with for this.

IIRC it was just a bracket competition. Teams of something like four or five players each.

I think the scores were based on weekly open competitions, since that was the only way everyone was able to play, but I could be wrong.

Maybe someone remembers better than I do.

..

This time, I think it would be neat to have parallel challenges, one with randomly set teammates based upon average score/# of ribbons (to create balanced teams), and a set of teams that are hand-picked by captains, without regard for balance, which would be the "main" teams in terms of collaboration.

Excellent & positive stuff, as I said, I only wish I had the brain to help with the code but I have the ambition to help pull it all together.

OK so before we take it national let's get a meeting site set up to bounce ideas about how to make it fair and run smooth for a long time. I think people will welcome it with open arms.

Maybe we can run it like a real football (soccer) league and have a div1 and div2 with promotion and relegation etc?

The script I wrote should run in any standard linux installation (maybe also in Mac but I am not familiar with them so can't say for sure). I am not sure if this means anything for you guys but it is written in bash. For processing I would typically use matlab type of software but just because is the one I am more familiar with, I am sure there are better options to make more portable.

Shouldn't be a problem for automatizing it just by setting it to run periodically and retrieve the data, process it and send an automatic email with the results.

For a test I retrieve all the challenge history since 2002 so I have now those data sets for reference and code developing if you want.

I am not a programmer so pretty sure that there is plenty of people out there that can improve over this but at least it is working so I guess it is something.

Keeping this alive.

Since we won't have a WPL/DPL soon I really hope this can be done. Last year WPL has been the best experience I've had here.

Just had a brainwave.

We could allocate team capts a certain amount of points to pick their team, a bit like fantasy football.

So if they wanted a Gyaban or Librodo on the squad it would take up a large amount of their allocated points.

That way, the team would HAVE to consist of a nice mix of both 'top class' and average players hence widening the learning curve too.

Might be nice if team capts were SC but that may not be possible I know.

I really like that idea, Marac.

It could work. But what about the competition? It would be different from WPL? I wasn't here during past DPC Olympics - It will be a country/continents based competition?

I think it best to leave country or brand teams out of it as not to limit ourselves

It had been the most funny part of last WPL. We had a male team, but we were from different continents with different time zones
and it was hard to communicate, but it was the exciting part as well. When I was editing my Heavy Metal image I had ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', '/') + 1) . ' Tommy_mac
on FB and we were chatting otherwise I couldn't be awake until 5.58 am. when I submitted my image, 2 minutes before rollover :)

I am sure once the genius coders get the code tested out we can start to get the pool sorted out and the captains and we can get the mark up and prices for the entrants.

I'm thinking maybe giving each captain 15 points to choose 4 other members for his team. The only problem I can see is selecting captains that are of equal standard, and of cause how many teams we can run with.

4-8-16

16 would be great for the league table.

WPL had 7 people per team. Why not not having at least 7-8 per team? :)

Why is 7-8 a magic number?
This was the main reason I stopped VENSERDOME. Everyone wanting a say and weren't willing to pull any strings themselves.

In the end, let MAK run things the way he wants. On further iterations we/he can modify to fix cracks that are present.

I think we definitely need people that can code the system to work. I'm a hard head so I wont be swayed by how the other stuff was run etc etc, I think it is nice to have it tight. We can work out the scoring system and stuff after we have a tight team to run the coding, If you are available and willing to help please let me know and we can discuss this via PM until we have a neat little package and then we can give it to the people and I am pretty certain we will have more than enough players ready to join, we may even have a Substitution pool for when players get injured or go on holiday etc etc.. early days.

First thing, WE NEED A TEAM TO CODE IT, if you can help please get on board.

Do we want an external site? Or do we want it in the forums?

One would point to Niall, the other to me...

Perhaps even both if there is a good reason.... Thoughts?

I can be the Enforcer.

A site would be good to set up and test and talk about how would all run, good idea.

Slippy - that's a serious tash there mate.
