They're saying the shooter's mom was a teacher at the school, though.

They're reporting the parent of the shooter was found dead as well.

That's what my mom just said. She called asking if I had heard about it. Apparently the shooter's father lived in NJ and he shot him before committing this gruesome act in CT. A shame!!!

Well, quite. I can't see that happening anytime soon though.

There was something (smaller in scale) in Tasmania (Australia) a good few years ago and this is THE best way I have ever seen it handled... The local media made ZERO mention of his name... for exactly that reason. He got almost zero publicity - even while the thing was been reported they just said the gunman or similar.

Tragic.

As much as I am for freedom of press & speech, I would be 110% in favor of a law forbidding the use of names & images of these monsters. Assign them a number and a generic avatar - like maybe a photo of a pile of dog shit.

I agree. But it almost sounds like he was going after his mom in this one. If that's the case it's not about notoriety. It's about a really sick individual. A

I can't believe that "news teams" are sticking cameras in the faces of little kids to ask how they are feeling after 20 of their classmates were gunned down. These vultures need to be leashed.

I believe there is something very wrong with most media these days and that something came about once things like 24 hours coverage and such became the norm. The need to constantly be 'reporting' even when there is nothing new or even verified. When news became a business and had to compete with each channel offering newer and faster 'news' then it really became a problem. The need to get something on air almost instantly to fill a slot meant that all proper reporting and fact verification fell by the wayside.

A perfect example of that is here...

If I was that Ryan Lanza, I'd be calling lawyers pretty quick.
rooum touches upon it, but since the advent of 24 news media, it's all about being there first, and hoping you're right after the fact. There are no reasons why journalistic integrity needed to be shit on before posting this guys picture, and in some cases, personal information over the idiot box and interweb.

Anybody anywhere could have a gun....Or a knife or a bomb...or whatever so it really don't matter about the laws

It was his brother who had his id on him, in the fog of war, and with his whole family dead, I am thinking a lawsuit is the furthest from his mind.

Therefore it's reasonable for anyone to walk into WalMart and buy a grenade launcher or C-4? If not, then you already acknowledge the merit and practical value of restrictions.

OK I knew the gun rights would come out........... No people should not be able to buy a grenade or c-4.... However, an " assault rifle" is nothing more than a semi- automatic weapon. They are great for deer hunting etc. This shooting at this school is truly tragic and my heart goes out to the victims and family. It truly saddens me that this has happened. This reaffirms my view that guns don't kill people...people kill people

I spent all day at my kids' elementary school wrapping presents in a "Santa's Workshop." Perhaps because it is a community school in a small community and everyone seems to know everyone else (and their business), the kids seem extra sweet and just "good kids." When I heard this news, all I could picture were the sweet little faces I saw today. :(

It is beyond my comprehension how anyone could do this, and my heart is broken for those who got the news no parent ever wants to get and for their friends and families.

Was waiting for this to be said. Never commented before, perhaps this is too close to home now, but...the phrase written below is said far too often and lacks a sense of completeness. Please allow me to fill in the words left out:

guns don't kill people because they are inanimate

people kill people with guns because they can

I am not advocating for anything here. Just simply stating the obvious. The text above in bold is way too accepted by society and no one has bothered to fill the rest of it in. I also feel as though people will ask the question "why did this happen", or "why does this happen so much now" when they should be asking "why didn't this occur when we grew up". Same result, but the path of answering the question is different, and as a result, may lead to the right answer.

Outlaw guns, outlaw knives, outlaw diesel fuel and fertilizer, outlaw alcohol, outlaw cigarettes, outlaw cars, and anything else that kills large quantities of people.
