Hey everyone,

Ive been doing a lot of studio work lately and I am trying to figure out how to shoot tethered so I can show models right away what we need to work on, the LCD display is to small and isn't cutting it. I shoot with a Nikon D700 and i want to tether to a MacBook Pro. I've been trying to find what program I need to use, but everything I read on the net shows programs for Windows.... I can't seem to find anything for Mac. Also, is there a special cable I need or can I use anyone that has a USB end and whatever the end is called that hooks up to the camera?

Cable should have come with your Nikon D700. Forget what it's called, but it came in the box.

I just do it in Aperture.
Go to: File -> Tether -> Start Session.
That's it.

that's the problem: you're shooting to a mac.

i'd recommend if you're going to try this to see about a wireless card and included software that's compatable with a mac. then see if the software would work tethered. if so, find out if you can get the software without the hardware.

or you could just use a specific google search like i did (mac supported software tethered image shooting nikon) and got this as a first result:
//www.sofortbildapp.com/
the screenshot shows d700 as the tethered camera.

i clicked "download" at the bottom of the page, got a 15.0 MB zip file show up with no "purchase" requirement up front. there's a "donate" button at the top, so presumably it's freeware and good-to-go (at least for a bit while you try it)

Take what I have to say with a grain of salt, 'cause I'm a PC kind of guy, and a Canonite as well, LOL! You may want to look at Lightroom for your tethered shooting. I find that it works very well for this. For a cable, you would be using whatever data cable normally is used to connect the camera to a computer. For the Canons, that's usually a USB cable with a "mini USB" connector at the camera end. Not sure about the D700.

<s> first you need to install iTunes on the D700. <\s>

The program I always use when shooting tethered is Capture One Pro. It's the industry's standard program for shooting tethered. It's not free, but it's a great program and highly recommended if you can get it.

The main problems with Adobe Lightroom, Capture One /or Aperture and etc are that you CAN NOT get Live-View nor adjust Aperture or Shutter from a computer. Many can not adjust flash settings at all. And the cable shooting, which is called Tethered, is yesteryear shooting. Just like no one shoot tethered speedlites.

For Canon: you need Canon WFT
For Nikon: you need Nikon WT
The drawbacks are they only support few top model cameras & not interchangeable to other camera systems. And they are over $600.00

But if you get one ATG AK1 Un-Tethered Systems, then you can use it on many cameras and shooting wirelessly up to max RAW/JPEG fps plus seeing wireless live-view and has built-in wireless radio flash transmitter (like Pocket Wizard Plus II).

If you are on a budget then shoot tethered:
Canon, use the ATG free software, which should come with your camera. Load EOS Utility.
Nikon, you have to buy Nikon Camera Control Pro2 software.
Sony, use the ATG free software. Load ATG's Sony Remote Control Camera. It can't do live-view.

You can try digiCamControl by Dukas. It's free. My students & friends love it.

ATG AK1 Un-Tethered Systems is made for close-up/macros/events/medical/scientific/portraits/teaching/wedding fields.
It runs on Window XP, Vista and 7.

My staff & other photographers are shooting up to 24fps wirelessly with the ATG AK1 Un-Tethered Systems at the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Here are some cameras that will be supported:

Please kindly donate some to him since he provides the software for free.

OH MY GOD!!!

I just had the scariest experience of my adult life.... I completed the install of AK1-Unteathered systems this afternoon and then was taken by horrible surprise as it slowly took over my PC and turned it into a maniacal killing machine... Everything started slowly, a few app errors at first, followed by a repeated BSOD, and then finally a full system glitch takeover... Sadly, it first took out my poor kitty cat, before engaging in a deadly struggle with me. Fortunately I survived, but I'm afraid that now it has me trapped in my house and I'm too terrified to even attempt to leave the house. Before it left the house, it repeatedly raped my lens collection, and has now stolen a Kai Shun kitchen knife before wiring up my front door with what appears to be an improvised claymore mine..... Right now I'm staring down at my front yard and watching my former beloved PC as it cruelly electrocutes helpless bunny rabbits, while castrating them with my favorite santoku....

I'm terrified, as I think it's probably going to burn down the house next, and I'm at a loss as to what to do... Please someone, send the National Guard...

You have pretty good and interesting descriptive skills. You should write a book. Maybe it will become a bestseller :) Wait... I probably shouldn't be smiling...

I am selling my Bicycle if you are interested, it has a very nice lamp on the front and a pretty good one on the back too but sadly one of the tyres has gone flat and the saddle smells a bit because I lent to my aunty last week but I will give it a wipe you would prefer.

We could swap the bike for an ATG AK1 Un-Tethered System just as long as you will include a spare light bulb with it OK? so do we have a deal? I can send you a pic of the bike but it is only an iPhone pic.

Careful. She's gotten around quite a bit, I heard. Even before she borrowed the bike.

I tried tethering my bicycle recently. The system needs some work, but it has potential.

Shooting tethered is for wusses.

Shooting untethered, there's a real adventure. One wrong move and you might fall thousands of feet to your certain death. That takes confidence and skill, the true measures of a professional shooter. Any doofus can do it tethered.

No need for the National Guard. Just carefully pour a pitcher of lemonade over it. Guaranteed.
