Just wondering if you could help clarify the advanced editing rule? Can I use a filter that creates a vignette/faded type of border on photoFXlab? Thanks in advance....

yes... but as long as you keep everything visible in vignette!
other should double check with me!

hi there, thank you for your reply, may I show you the photo and see if the border is ok? What would be the best way of doing this?? Thank you:)

typically a vignette is a vignette NOT a boarder. 2 separate rules. Vignettes are fine to use in Advanced Editing.

Boarders are also fine to use in Advanced Editing but they must be distinctive...here are some of my boarders NOT to be confused with vignettes (though I think some of the ones that I've chosen do have vignettes).

that's a pretty good variety...but bear in mind that boarders are not always received very well...it's a love it or hate it here on DPC.

Hi Ja-9, thank you for your response and I love your use of borders/vignette, especially on the last 3.... I was going to use something like that on mine but after help from FocusPoint I have decided against it...I do love the effect though!! Thanks again.

I've gotten the occasional comment (usually accompanied by a low vote) complaining about borders I added to a finished image. Just one of those "you can't please everyone" things. I did one time have an image called up for validation on a creative border that was added as part of a treatment. It was never validated nor disqualified, I think the SC was not able to agree on it and it just became a non-issue once a couple of weeks passed. Didn't perform terribly well anyway.

Let's try to get this whole border thing clarified. I have often reluctantly disallowed myself to use borders or border/vignette combos because of not being sure of their legitimacy. Yet I see the sorts of thing that I avoid quite a bit. Some of ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_F.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_F.gif', '/') + 1) . I know that some people have had similar things DQ'd. It is all pretty vague where the line is drawn. I particularly like some of the Filter Forge film frame borders but am not game to use them.

Some of the others may have very minor borders

**** is from the collection of NIK (Color Efex)...

I know they are not liked much (borders) but I still apply them when I feel that they help the picture.

What I'd be curious about it WHO'S have been Dq'd more specifically, and what type of borders were they....

Nothing has changed in the rules since then, but the interpretation. I think it's still hit & miss on whether you'll be DQ'd or not.

The biggest point of confusion is that a border, the way DPC defines it, must be clearly recognizable as a border, that is, separate from the image. A vignette, by definition, retains some of the image information, and therefore is not a border. If you manage to apply such a heavy vignette that some subject matter is completely removed, you may be DQ'd. Otherwise, a vignette is legal.
If what you apply is clearly a border, that is, not part of the image but something surrounding the image, then the thing to watch for is the addition of artwork, which can be as simple as a pattern in the border. There is a lot of gray area, and I don't personally think that the rule has been applied all that consistently over time, so watch it on this one. Personally, I prefer no order, or a very simple border, and only when the border clearly adds to the impact of the photo. In most cases, I believe the impact of the image is maximized when it stands on its own.

Natasha, just to clarify, the most sure resource for "is it okay" is by submitting a ticket to the site council. FocusPoint can give an experienced opinion on the matter, but his "okay" will unfortunately hold no ground with the site council. The site council is who is responsible for making the DQ decisions. I'm not sure why Leo is saying to check with him. He knows better, so maybe it's just worded funny.

I thought about submitting this once, but figured it would be considered "artwork".

Hi, focus point kindly offered to give me his opinion, which he did and also suggested contacting site council, both of which were greatly appreciated....I ended up staying away from the border issue as it wasn't a clear border but I felt it did add to the photo...
Cheers.....
