Mabey I'm just a stupid teenage photographer with no eye but I just don't see anything in this picture! And it won! Could someone please tell me that i'm not insane. I just want to know what people think is good.

The challenge was in 2002 and there were only 9 submissions. Someone had to win out them.

Well, of course everyone is entitled to his/her opinion. You have made yours.

Mine is: An every day object that takes on an almost abstract feel, with great reflections. Would be great for stock photography.

Perhaps when making a "critique" you can find a more useful and productive way of voicing your opinion. <-- Just an opinion.

So the voting scale has changed... deal with it.

Consider: the challenge is road signs. Look at the other entries in the challenge and then it will dawn on you that this shot captured a road sign with the extra bonus of the reflection. Think: would you have thought about it?

Look at it again and notice that the picture complies with the challenge but subordinates the sign to the trees and sky. If this does not sink in after a couple looks, then come back at a later date and look at it again.

If you return later and can not see that it is special, then this type of picture and its variations will forever escape you. It is okay, we all have ideas of what we like and do not like, but this is a universal concept which is displayed in many different forms. But, hey, you are the sole judge of your likes and dislikes.

If you came back with the full stop sign head on, I would vote higher Drews shot becasue in place of a sign I am getting a creative work. But again, some shots are like fine wine.

One of the few things you have control over is a first impression. People will generally think about you what you want them to upon their first interactions with you. In fact, some research has determined that people will form an unchanging, definitive opinion about someone within the first 10 seconds of an encounter...

It's one thing to say, "I am who I am, deal with it!" On the other hand, I know some people who have introduced themselves in such a way, and carried themselves with such poise and maturity, that I was absolutely amazed to learn they were teenagers.

What this comes down to, as you go forward in life, people will typically respond to you the way you want them to. If you approach them with tact, honesty, an open mind, and with manners, they will likely respond to you in kind. If not, well, I'm sure I've said enough.

I believe it's also shown that it takes quite a few possitive instances of contact to negate just one initial negative encounter.

Unfortunately, sometimes, it can take forever...

Have you seen the other entries j/k :P

Besides it was the first challenge ever. See how much the site has progressed.

Hmm.. although perhaps the query was not voiced in the most diplomatic way possible (and just noticed there's quite a rude comment left on the photo... tsk tsk tsk), I think many replies say more about the person replying than the query itself. For anyone who doesn't know DPC, it does look odd that the general standard seemed a lot lower in the early challenges. Of course, this makes sense when you look at the number of other entries.

Just what I was going to say - MAN!! 9 submissions??? It's a struggle to keep submissions under 250 now! And I must say the quality of submissions has greatly improved.

Think the image is fine. Doubt that it would win now but still a decent image.

Opinions are only valued when they conform to the content and style of delivery of most of the group.

Sad, but true. I always think it's hilarious how people will gang up on somebody who asks an honest question...sure, no diplomacy there but show some friggin' grace.

Anyhow, I'm not that fond of the photo either. I wouldn't have put a comment on it saying that it 'sucks', however...
