Went out exploring and shooting today, got something I like for the Free Study (at a completely different place) and also came back with this shot which I think has potential, but my normal editing style doesn't do much for it.

Figured I'd post it as an opportunity to show people what different spins could be put on a single original, and then discuss techniques.

Very cool. I like the first one, makes it look like a horror movie or novel or something. Were the scratches in the sky added manually or part of a filter?

Nice shot. Definitely had a tough time editing, though.

Not really happy with the shades of blue. If were mine, I'd probably work on that a bit more.

Interesting to see the different ways one original can be tweaked. I hope we start having more of these threads again.

In the original, the house was dominating the photo, but I didn't feel it should. The foreground light really bothered me, because it screamed "headlights". So, I left the house illuminated, but attempted to make it look like the light source was from the moon by darkening the lower half of the house and the foreground grass. The grass still bothered me, so I blurred it to take the detail out of it that my eyes were so drawn to. I did a big, heavy dodge in the center of the image to further lessen the impact of the white house. The brightness in the center seemed to help balance it, and I felt my eyes more easily continued across the image to the sunset.

My edit notes are in my comments.

Decided to go with story telling. Cropped a bit, straightened, created a path to the house and the tree from the bright patch in the front, connecting the three main areas of the image

Good idea on the blur. I agree with you on the foreground light as well, didn't like the flat look of it which came from it being right near the camera. Maybe it'd be better shot while there was a bit more light left in the sky, or even some moonlight.

I mostly used Nik Analog Efex, and a bit of levels masking.
