The former Blue Ribbon in the "Landscape VII" challenge has been disqualified for creating an illegal HDR merge. Essentially, the photographer combined a section of sky from a wider-angle view of the scene with a narrower view that had a stronger composition. The photographer felt, perhaps understandably, that since the wider shot could be *cropped* down and scaled to match the narrower one, that this would suffice. Unfortunately, we can't allow that, because it would open up a major can of worms if we started validating images in advanced editing that were composites of two different views of the same scene.

Congratulations to our new ribbons and HM. There are now two yellow ribbons and a single HM...

If we are going to have rules, they need to be applied as fairly as possible. I get why this had to be a DQ.
06/02/2015 01:17:27 PM · #14
what exactly is the purpose of the rules?

since Bear_Music became member of the supreme counsel, has there be more suppression of creative thinking?
or is it just my take on this?

It's just your take -- what you've been getting is more detailed explanations of exactly why images get DQd ...

This may be a don't kill the messenger thing.
I have to say for a group of volunteers, I try not to be too hard on the SC. And I tend to think they use good human judgement - moreso than governments we are used to.

i didn't ask why we have rules, I asked what is their intended purpose.

One would think that the intended purpose of the rules would be that the panel rendering decisions have parameters to guide them when they believe an infringement has occured.

agreed, but that doesn't give insight to why we have certain rules. why can we do things and not others? what is the criteria to determine is something is allowed of banned?

You need to cite a specific case in order to give you a rational answer -- different parts of the rules have different intents.

We've just been getting more explanations. Many times there wasn't even an announcement that there was a DQ, and we just noticed in passing.

I don't think that there have been more DQs than normal, I think people are just starting to push the boundaries more.

its really something to be ignored
