Canon has just announced the first macro lens with a built-in ring light. It's a shame that it's for their mirrorless camera.

AND that it's not true macro, going only to 1:2, and that it's got a plastic mount. Fascinating concept, regardless...

Actually, it goes all the way to 1:1 and slightly beyond, according to the Canon-released information:

Cool. I think that first report must have seen the "1.2 x Super Macro" and decided it meant 1:2 :-)

Not if you followed my link. It definitely said 1:2. If it goes slightly beyond 1:1 it's starting to sound even more attractive. I'm almost tempted to pick up a 2nd Canon M if the lens price is right but I know I shouldn't.

I think Robert is exactly correct... the )PetaPixel report stated 1:2, however the source linked on their page(CanonWatch) has it correctly as 1.2x. PetaPixel misinterpreted that as 1:2.

What a brilliant idea. Now to release it for a canon DSLR mount... wow.

That's not likely to happen. At least not according to the guy I spoke to at my favourite camera shop on Friday. He reckons they want to go on selling their ring flashes. Makes sense.

The LED ring is certainly no substitute for a good macro flash... when you need to stop subject motion, or just need to sneak up on a subject, the ring is not really optimal. Still, I can see it being very useful in a lot of situations.
The lens is EF-M, though, which means it has a very short back-focus. It might be usable on an EOS SLR with an adapter, but for macro only, you'd never get near infinity focus.
