Seems to be an epidemic here as of late, but I'll see if I can get any takers anyway. This is the photo I submitted for the Defining Feature challenge:

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/265/thumb/111493.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/265/thumb/111493.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

And the original unedited file is here (caution 1.4MB). I was just wondering how anyone else would have edited it. Please feel free to do as much photoshopping as you want, I'd just like to see it as you would have submitted it ... thanks :)

I liked your crop and the picture. Don't know how this would have scored, but I like the vase part of the picture so I left it in and tried to connect the girl and the drawing with color. It was all done with layers with nothing added or taken out so it would have been legal. I do wish she had been more over to the right of the picture so it would be more balanced.

cool ... thanks Pat :)

as you can tell, I didn't have a clear centerpoint in mind when I took the picture ... as it's pretty much 2 pictures in one.

Had a couple of goes at your pic.

1. Tight crop B&W (safe for dial-up)' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/24962/thumb/114068.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/24962/thumb/114068.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

2. Medium crop, full colour (BIG - not safe for dial-up)
' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/24962/thumb/114071.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/24962/thumb/114071.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

I think you had it just right, Milo...I like the crop, tone and everything...

I thought for sure that was a professional model, by the way! Does she do any professional modelling, or just for your photos?

For the purposes of the challenge, I wouldn't change a thing (well, maybe a little more space above Jessamyn's head). I think your editing was spot-on (as evidenced by a 15th place finish), and showing any more of the background or leaving the photo in color would have detracted from the focus on music. My personal interpretation of the challenge was that we were aiming for a distinctive physical characteristic rather than a personal interest, so I think you scored quite well for pushing the edge.

I agree 100% with Shannon.

Thanks Shannon (Neil, Steve, and Mike), I don't disagree. I'd actually like to see more originals from some of the top scoring submissions .... figured I'd put my original file out there for all the world to see. I think some people are reluctant to show originals because the final product is so different, but that's how we learn.

I agree and I think your setting a good precedent for others to follow...I hope to see more of this as well. It's been suggested that it be incorporated as an optional feature of uploading the challenge submission...I think this would be a great idea!

this thread had a good example because the original looks way different from the blue ribbon winner (sunset at castle hill)

I liked the texture in the concrete so went with that to create a more industrial/grungy type of shot. It's interesting how the same shot can produce so many different moods.
