@Simms - you bring up some very interesting points/observations re: DPC and why it appears to be losing its user base. The same thing has occurred in real estate photography whereas every agent/realtor has a camera in their pocket and some are very good quality which makes our business suffer.

Things have changed over the past ten years and it's affected everyone whether they like it or not. I'm sure the owner of DPC is well aware of this and my prediction is he will eventually sell DPC to the highest bidder(s). In fact, I'm sure there are those waiting in the wings who are ready to make the transition and revise/improve the site. I saw it happen with Photography For Real Estate. It's all about getting with the program and no time is better than the present.

Ouch...

Hey, now I remember you! Didn't you leave here for some diplomat job?

LOL!

There are just better resources for learning and improving out there on the internet these days. Back in the Golden Age of DPC there was many a missed chance to publicise the site, embrace social media and make this the "go to" resource, but a total lack on interest from the owner means that good ideas and developments to the site that could have helped leverage it's potential just never happened. For me, when it turned into a photoshop challenge site, is when I threw in the towel, it lost it's magic and there were a heap of sites that specialised in that kind of thing, many of them far better than DPChallenge, because they had owners who embraced these changes.

Does this site make a lot of money for the owner anymore? I imagine it's a bit of pocket money for him if nothing else, no real time investment is required. Surprised you guys haven't made an offer to buy it from him, if that happened then maybe things could change for the better. Then you contact some of the photographers who have made a success of it in the real world, get them back on board in some capacity using their potentially thousands of social media followers to promote the site and watch interest build again.

I pop back in from time to time, but nothing ever changes - it's more of a novelty to see "if it's still going" than due to any real interest in the content.

A shame really.

I edited/personalized this sentence and posted on my social media pages. It might not be much but it was a similar post from a former member a few years back that inspired me to join.

Well, it was kinda obvious that I wasn't thinking of your feelings at all there for a bit. Sorry 'bout that, truly.

I am serious about wanting to do something to help.

As to the owner.....he is what he is, I will always be grateful for the site. BUT.....we're not locked into doing nothing if we can figure out other wys to publicize the site and get the word out.

I've been hitting up FB pages, talking to friends and want to help wherever I can.

I just posted this on a couple of FB pages I frequent that are photography specific, and Vivi ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_F.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_F.gif', '/') + 1) . And I posted a link to us under it.

I'm just going to try to think of stuff to do and do it to raise awareness. I love this place and don't want to see it end.

Hit me up for whatever.....I'll say no if I can't but please ask for help if you want it.

These are the kind of posts that IMNSHO are of the most destructive.

First......what's your point? You want to just rub salt in the wound?

Nice....

I'm venting, and sort of pissed off, because I see this same shit other places on socia media, volunteer orgs, school groups, whatever.

With the exception of a few dedicated and (fool)hardy souls, there's this "What's in it for me?" attitude that's, quite frankly, REALLY getting old.

$25 bucks a year.....what do you want for that? What can you get for that? Not much. At least if you sit on your ass and wait for it to come to you.

For anyone that wants it, they can PM me for the loooooooooooong version, but DP Challenge has changed and enriched my life in ways I couldn't have imagined in my wildest dreams.

But I *will* take credit for doing the work. I practiced my ass off, badgered people, and entered challenges.

Because of that, I got reasonably good at this stuff, and have various awards, sales, a following, a gallery, and an enormously improved perspective of life and the world around me........to show for my $25 a year.

The people are what made, and make the difference. The ones that participate. The ones that help. The ones that vote and comment.

So truly......if you entered ONE challenge in a year, didn't make the commitment to YOUR photography, didn't ask someone to help you or help someone else, and want to blame the site?

Nice....

Maybe it's not the site that's the losing cause.

Unfortunately, in these days of instant gratification and the idea that you shoud get something for nothing, there just seem to be less people who are willimng to do the hard work necessary to better their lives themselves.

Any SC that finds my view of this situation objectionable, jettison this as needed.

This all looks very interesting and full of beans.

Let's hope something comes of it real soon.

I'm not going to make a snide remark, but I would love to hear your thoughts on grassroots ideas we can do ourselves (the users) to generate interest and get more people to enter, vote, and comment. Why didn't you participate more? What could have inspired/encouraged you to participate more?

' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/31_F.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/31_F.gif', '/') + 1) . ' geinafets hits the nail on the head. If we nurture the people already on board at DPC, by voting and commenting, then they will stay and learn photography. Not only will they stay, they will likely use word of mouth to encourage others to join our community.

That's an easy one. Look at right, the count is currently 347.

There are names on the list of members who are deceased.

External use of DPChallenge.com "stuff" - has this been considered?
Essentially, it sounds like 3rd party use of material when / if a member of the community uses DPChallenge images and so forth.
Is permission needed from the photographers to use their images on an external website?

Some answers, and potentially more questions, can be found on the DPChallenge.com 'Terms of Use' page.
Sections 4.6, 5.6, and 6.2 look to be of potential interest.

... now should DPChallenge.com (i.e. owner Langdon) designate a Facebook page directly some questions would be N/A (except for a revision perhaps on the 'Terms of Use' page).

Food for thought.

Up to 28! There are two people who volunteered for Facebook, two who volunteered for Instagram, one (me) who volunteered for Twitter, and two who volunteered for unspecified accounts. I am hoping to contact everyone about those things tomorrow so we can get the ball rolling! (Barely 10 entries in a challenge is killing my heart!)

I found it through a link at the (now dormant) tech-humor site BBspot.com ...
