I seem to recall the rules before were very detailed in what can and cannot be done. Now they seem a bit more open/vague/permissive.

So are layer masks allowed these days in Standard editing? Like for adjusting levels, brightness, contrast, sharpness, etc... in just parts of the image?

Layer masks are fine :-) Recommended, even! Don't leave home without them :-)
