I am very confused by the topic and description for this challenge and would be interested in other opinions. The title and description are ambiguous. The title suggests a general description of an appealing photograph of interesting shapes and colors. The description seems to narrow that concept to the style of Angus which is quite specific and mostly confined to pictures of walls with colors, and straight line shapes, and with a human head thrown in occasionally with a sign. Then to add to the confusion is the related previous challenge which has an array of different pictures many of which have only A little relationship other than color, shapes and walls. I actually felt some of the 2nd page scoring entries did a better job of duplicating the Angus style than the the top rated pictures but may not have been as appealing. Therein lies the confusion. Is the concept of this challenge to duplicate Angus's vision or try to please the viewers with our own concept of beautiful shapes and colors???

It says to take inspiration from our own DPC's new happiness challenge. My browser (for some reason) is taking about 20 seconds to load each image from the Angus link, so I'm going off the DPC challenge.

When I look at that challenge, the colors seem to almost shout at me. Though it's a comfortable loud because of the shapes. If the entries had been more complex, more riotous, it would have been off putting (imo). Yet the simpleness and comfort of the shapes makes it just a burst of joy instead of a dizzying calliope.

So I'm going to go look for splashy, happy, happiness. :)

There's already a thread about this here where it has been discussed. Don't need another one IMO.

Ok. Can understand that. Why not change the title of THAT thread then. That has pertinent, valid conversation about the challenge theme, the reason for changes, etc.

Starting a new thread at this stage of the game, with new non-related banter, is not fair to those that have already entered (25 entries) the challenge (with only a day and a half left). I have not entered this one yet, so no skin off my nose. I'm just thinking of fairness overall. Full disclosure: I am looking at my archives now to see if I have something that fits.

Might have been a good idea, but it's a little late now, and people who were familiar with the previous thread would get confused when it disappeared ...

However your handy link to the previous thread should mean that everyone has equal access to the entire discussion ... :-)

I did already have an entry in this challenge and spent quite a bit of time looking for one that I felt was appropriate. Then I began to 2nd guess myself for the reasons I mentioned which were not discussed in the other thread. I am not trying to reinvent the wheel. I was only asking for an open discussion and opinions on the issue.

I get it. I just don't agree with having another conversation where the first part isn't included (the first part being what many may have used to weigh the viability of their entry choice).

In the end, in the overall perspective of life in general - no big deal really. Carry on. :-)

Larry, I guess you were just looking for an opinion? :) And look what happened!

I don't know myself the answer to your question, I just entered the image that has colors and shapes, and is the one I liked the most. I know it might finish at the bottom of the heap so probably do not take my advice! :)

Good luck in the challenge whatever you decide to enter.

That's good advice Margaret. I'll just go with what I like. Thank you.

Not necessarily!

Actually, there's a photo that I'm completely in love with. But I don't want it to get the 2 second vote treatment.

I thought another challenge "beloved, at least by me, Take a moment to see what I see" would be fun.

A challenge where the whole idea is to enter a photo that you didn't want to be just another photo to whiz by. One that you want people to actually take some time and look at.

I know that's what we're supposed to be doing with every challenge. But it's so easy not to. To only give that extra study time to the ones that have the initial appeal -- the ones we WANT to know better. It's easy to give just a peripheral glance to the average photos.

I've grown quite a bit since being here. The photos that make me think "yuck" when I see them -- I look at longer. Just why did this person take this photo. What am I missing? However, the average ones still flash by me. I'd be curious to see what archival image holds your heart? Which one did you care too much about to let people tear apart? I definitely have one that comes to my mind. Are you harboring any?

Rarely do comments reach that level on images / entries anymore - are you referencing the score when you say "let people tear apart"?

I've held back on images in the past because they opened the window into my personal space (i.e. family mostly, sometimes family friends) that I didn't want to share.

This is me. And every time I've decided, "Well, this transcends the 'snapshot' genre" and entered a photo for which I'm vulnerable in terms of the subject, I've regretted that decision.

Oh, I wasn't aware that this challenge is supposed to be about beloved photos. I thought it is about beloved items/people/doggies or whatever... and looking at the entries it seems I'm not the only one with that conception.

And about beloved pictures:
Yes, there are a few but they wouldn't qualify for an entry anyhow. What makes these photos so special for me is a certain memory, which a viewer doesn't share.

Quite surprised my entry is doing so well...I did not expect that at all...hope it lasts

With no description on the challenge, one has to assume whatever the photo is about is what is beloved, in my opinion.

Beloved, yes ... but this thread is about colors and shapes.

Either way, please remember to vote!

Don't forget "at least by me" so my interpretation was "not beloved by many".

PS I know this a wrong thread, not sure how it got kidnapped but I don't want to start a new one.

I have a different interpretation of “at least by me”. I take it to mean it MAY at least only be beloved by you but MAY also be beloved by many!
This reinforces my initial statement for starting this thread. Oftentimes there are different interpretations of the same challenge. Bottom line is I feel that voters should vote on the quality of the image and not so much that it is a different definition of the challenge. Sometimes it appears that people get too stuck on DNMC. We should allow some flexibility in interpretation.

But your interpretation makes it just a Free Study

PS Edited to remove the confusion with quotes :)

I’m not saying that if the challenge is “Ducks” and you put in a picture of a horse it shouldn’t make a difference. But if the challenge is “Horse” and you put in a picture of a donkey then there should be an understanding that donkeys are part of the horse family and the picture should not be downgraded because of the interpretation of a horse! Pretty crazy analogy but I think it gets the point across?:)
