For quite a while now we've been running archival challenges on the open challenge dates to permit participation by quarantined photographers of both categories, paid and unpaid.

It seems to me we probably don't need to do that anymore, and it bothers me (I know I'm not alone in this) that fully one-third of our challenges are archival when this is SUPPOSED to be a "Challenge" site, where we create a topic and then go shoot for it.

So I'm thinking (and this is just me thinking out loud) it may be time to go back to the "normal" pattern and just run occasional archival challenges while reverting the Tuesday Open Challenges to the usual standard editing.

I'm curious what the active membership has to say on this topic. And I'll bring it up in SC forum as well...

I'm in total agreement with you, Bear!

Donít the archival challenges have greater participation than the normal challenges (apart from free studies)? That alone would be a reason to keep them for me.
Iíve entered more challenges in the last 18 months than any year in the last 15 yrs due to the archival challenges. you donít have to enter an archival image, you can shoot a new one if you donít have anything in the archives or want to be challenged

They well might. Being able to search one's archives does lower the bar on the work required to get an image for a challenge. At some point, though, mining your archives becomes less fruitful as the quality of the "ore" degrades.
I certainly can see still running Archival challenges occasionally, but Like Robert I don't see that they need to be every week anymore. I'd rather see us get back to shooting for challenges.

Archival challenges are one of the reasons I lost interest.
Just happened to check in today for some random reason.

I agree they are no longer needed.

I'm guessing the Australian members will disagree. When last I heard their lockdown laws were pretty strict and their Covid figures are the highest they've ever been.

Our lockdown status has changed in Australia no restriction now but still unable too travel too regional areas. We're almost 90% doubles vac in Australia borders will be open from 1st November and travelling O/S will an option soon too some Countries like Singapore for double vaccinated with no 2 week quarantine Our cover cases are dropping as we get fully vac

End it or maybe have one a month or so.

Australia is less than 60% vaccinated.

Not opposed to archival. In proportion. Let's say maybe 1 in 5?

I do like being able to pull something from archive when life is busy, but I donít like doing it weekly.

Weíre down so far in numbers and have the busiest time of the year coming in a couple of weeks.

We could treat it as weaning off anti-depressants ó do it slowly and give us time to adjust :)

Go to every other week until Jan 1, and then maybe one a month (maybe have it one of the expert editing challenges (NOT the free study). There have been a number of people, myself included, that would have fun having access to more photos for expert editing.

End archival. Time to get out and take new photos!

This sounds like the same style of grumbling as what happens when someone gets a hair up their.... bee in their bonnet and decides that Minimal should go.

If you don't want to enter an Archival challenge, DON'T ENTER AN ARCHIVAL CHALLENGE!!!!!!

There have been people here longer than my 15 years, but I loive it that some of the shots I've gotten that were either/or shots over the years have their day in the sun.

I've gone on vacations where I had shots I couldn't enter 'cause I'd exhausted ways to shoehorn them into another challenge or they timed out.

As to the pandemic? Yeah, go ahead and take chances if you want, but I'm a 66yo overweight, asthmatic, fat guy with COPD & AFIB.

I don't fuck with my health.

I distance, I don't go out in public in enclosed places, I don't hang around people I don't know much, ESPECIALLY if they don't mask up.

Y'all do what you want, but to just gloss over the fact that this Covid thing is really bad in many places 'round the world isn't right.

It's. Not. Over.

So if people are tired of the Archival challenges and want to shut them down, fine, but don't even say that it's okay during the pandemic that's still killing people worldwide.

Jeb, for the most part people are moving around with relative freedom in their personal environments now, even if travel is restricted for them, and most DPC challenges of the traditional sort don't require doing something covid-risky.

Regarding challenge-participation numbers being highest for the archival Tuesdays, that's due in large part to the fact that they are the only challenges open to non-paying members...

Iím in favor of keeping archival. We still are not nearly back to pre pandemic access to travel or even normal daily commute.
I really enjoy being able to run through old travels, etc for an entry.
And I am not moving around yet with any comfort that can be defined as freedom.
(maybe Iíll feel differently after a booster).

The only reason Iím still here is because of the archivals. I love browsing through my photos because it reminds me of a time when we were allowed to travel without restrictions.

I doubt I would enter much if they disappear.

The DPC has this awful tradition of shooting itself in the foot. The participation in Open challenges before Archival was lower. Some old members came back because of Archival.

In any case Archival challenges are less than a third of all challenges (with free studies) so what's wrong with keeping them? And why not make them all Extended? Why can't we have at last some freedom! Remove the shackles of Standard editing!! ;)

Sorry, I got up not in the best of moods and this did not help.

Iím with you Margaret. Make them extended. I know it sounds like Iím being lazy, and maybe I am. I have no interest in going out and shooting for challenges any more. I did that for 10 years and Iím done.,

I am in favor of keeping Archival challenges (it is indeed fun to go through old stuff and find forgotten gems :)), but I am firmly against making them all(!) extended. I am tired of looking at fake imagery (and often poorly executed, because it does take a considerable skill to do it well). I know that perhaps it would not be a popular opinion, fake images generally tend to do better in Extended Free Studies, but I would much rather have this site remaining primarily a home and a school for true photography, not digital art.

Don't worry, this thread was an announcement, not an invitation for input.

PS I like digital art, especially in 3D. As I found out it is indeed very difficult to master.

PS2 DPC is no longer a "school", too few new members wanting to learn and too few old members wanting to teach. And the quality of entries does not match that of, for example, 1x so this is definitely not a photography "school".

South Africa has less than 20% of the population fully vaccinated. Theatres are starting to open up but when last I heard sporting events were still being held without spectators...

Although Covid numbers are the lowest they've been since May 2020 people are anticipating a 4th wave in the next couple of months.

I don't go out more than necessary and went to an outdoor restaurant this week for the first time in almost a year. I no longer go to the places I went for photos.

That said I don't often enter photos from my archive and my average score this year is better than it's ever been.

I agree on keeping Archival but NOT in extended. Digital art - or digital illustration using photography are really not PHOTOGRAPHY. Answering to ' . substr('https://www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_F.gif', strrpos('https://www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_F.gif', '/') + 1) . ' marnet on 1X, even if occasionally I get a photo published there, I find no interest in most of what they award. The combination between Covid and the new trend is a new form of photo manipulation

I'm all for keeping archival, at least for once a fortnight. And I like the idea of combining archival with extended. Maybe that could be once every four weeks. (And I'm talking compromise here.)

We have just had Covid restrictions eased (not abolished). But we have come out of lockdown before only to have it return shortly after. We are not gadding about everywhere and I think it will be sometime before we feel like taking any real trips. My husband and I are both double vaxxed, but we know it's still possible to get infected.

Archival still serves a purpose, and as said before, you can still shoot afresh if you want to.

Although I barely participate anymore, I really like the idea of the archival challenges. Maybe cut them back to a couple a month with a few extended challenges thrown in. I've found it rewarding to go through my "oeuvre" and find shots I'd completely forgotten about.
10/23/2021 07:34:42 AM · #25
I agree with you're thinking but does it really matter??? Archival or not the best voted images wins. Why not just lessen archival in some of the challenges?
