Well, I tried to follow the challenge description for bridge...

"Details: The challenge is to photograph a bridge. A bridge may provide you passage across a river or you may be bridging from one state of mind to another. A bridge is not always a physical structure. Let your imagination run freely as you choose a bridge to photograph."

Having recently won my first blue ribbon with a photo of a bridge I decided to go with a non-literal bridge and as I expected my score was terrible.

I wanted to share some other photos from that day but was waiting until the challenge was over.

Here is my entry
"Bridging the Culture Gap at the Chinese New Years Parade"

and here are some newly uploaded photos...

No war would have had a much greater impact on the angle you were going for in my opinion. In your entry, the only action going is the angle of the camera, otherwise it is just an in focus milling crowd. I really like the no war pic and it's sublte relation to bridging in at least two ways.

I gave this one 5,not because of the non-literal aspect, I got that ok , but the blown sky was a little off putting. Overall a good image and should have finished higher.I suffered from the same anti non-literal votes but it is to be expected, someone recently said you have to smack em in the face with meeting the challenge to get high results.
If you like it that is the main thing.
I love the new year shot, keep shootin,
Paul.

does look like abstract interpretations of 'bridge' are pretty tough to do well...

If you look at the ones who did ok, not putting up a picture of a real bridge, there's:
' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/309/thumb/147568.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/309/thumb/147568.jpg', '/') + 1) . ' Bridging the gap

and
' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/309/thumb/146950.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/309/thumb/146950.jpg', '/') + 1) . ' Bridge to the sky

who were 16th and 18th, respectively.

As was suggested by peecee, these got to where they are because their interpretation of bridge is so obvious.

I think yours, for lack of a better word, is a little 'loose' - it almost looks like you could have picked one of the pictures you've taken, and decided to make it a bridge entry by adding a creative title. If you had a close up of an old, chinese woman connecting with a young black girl (or something like that), i think the theme would have been stronger - especially if you had the hands connecting, extending the bridge metaphor.

Nice pictures, none the less! Look forward to checking out your future entries!

JPR .. loved your entry in general but don't feel that it conveys your message of culturalism. There's not much in the composition (besides chinese text on a building in the back if you're looking for it...) that suggests your point.

I thought it was the white person and the black person surrounded by thousands of chinese people that conveyed the message, not the chinese text on the building...

JPR, I have to agree with you in the fact that I did use my mind freely and yes bridges are not always physical structures so I went with something unique. I couldn't believe the amount of standard bridges there were ! The way I understood the details of the challenge was we were to keep away from those...mmm. Anyway apart from that I like what I shot apart from the little blown out areas, I enjoyed snapping this little fellow. Thankyou all who left comments and those who gave me nice high scores ! It means a lot :-)
Here's my entry :

I thought the connection to the challenge was weak but gave it a 7 because it is a very good picture.

Looks like an average day in Banff to me.

Besides, I'm stretching...that's pretty much the only reason I could think of as to why it placed low..and plus, as soon as someone starts a "why so low" thread I get bitchy.
