I took this a few days ago. I think this is the kind of thing they are looking for. Comments welcome.

I would have to say a small subject would be the way to go but its hard to make sure its sharp and clear what the subject your shooting is when its small. This picture is a prime example I looked at and then double looked at it almost closer to get at what the subject was finally figuring out its the bird. I would have to say excellent shot this would be something I would look for in the challenge.

My wife told me I should do a nude self-portrait for minimalism. :-(

following the recent debate over a recent image, what was the decision on large uneven borders?

Are we allowed to take a pic of a small object on a pure white backgorund, and then "create" a 640x480" image by maiking a large border to the image thus making it the desired size.??

Very popular image here from Remie.

I'm pretty sure the image in question remained disqualified, so the answer would be no - your border must obviously be a border.

Edit: grammar.

I believe the decision was this:
The size of the border isn't really the issue, but it must LOOK like an OBVIOUS border, not like part of the picture.

I always think of it as one object that is much smaller offsetting another larger, usually a scape. Like those paintings that are one colour and there is a single thin complementary line running through it.

No idea of how to make a photo of that.

i understand the meaning of the word but i'm not sure about it in the context of the challenge. are we just talking about pics with a lot of negative space or would these be considered Minimalism?

Those work for me. Went down to the water this morning looking for something like that. Hopefully I've found a unique take on it.

I like your two samples.

Challenge description: Create an image where your subject is the strong point of the image, but only occupying a very small portion of the image space.

This is an eccentric interpretation of "minimalism", from an artist's point of view, but it's there in B/W. This image by BradP fits the challenge description perfectly, IMO, but would not be considered "minimalist" art, for example:

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/19708/thumb/143184.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/19708/thumb/143184.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

In all of Sher's images posted, I'd consider the "subject" as taking up more than "a very small portion of the image space." However, the following image would fit my personal definition of "minimalism in art.":

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/1717/thumb/69366.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/1717/thumb/69366.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

Likewise, the following image by Wil is pretty "minimalist" from an artistic perspective but the subject virtually fills the frame:

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/30222/thumb/168591.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/30222/thumb/168591.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

That last leads us to an interesting conundrum; if we counted all the pixels that are black, and counted all the not-black pixels (which in this case are the "subject") we'd find that black (background) pixels VASTLY outnumber colored (subject) pixels, so in that sense the subject fills up a "very small portion of the image space." However, the subject itself, in its dimensions, is virtually full-frame, so it seems not to meet the challenge, realistically.

Oyyyy....

Robt.
