hey everyone.

my name is mike schneider, you know me as thatcloudthere. i have a problem...nay...an opportunity. i need a website.

i already own //www.thatcloudthere.com and i will be building a portfolio for it soon. this will be the website for my stock, landscape, people, etc. photography...anything that is generally saleable will go under "ThatCloudThere Photography".

but.

i will be going to school for photojournalism and will soon be vying for jobs at dailies and magazines and will need a website which is a bit more personal and highlights my documentary/photojournalism work...almost every web site of this sort is under the person's name (ex. //www.jamesnachtwey.com, //www.joachimladefoged.com, //www.chiplitherland.com, etc.) and //www.mikeschneider.com is $600 US and //www.michaelschneider.com is being used and after talking to the guy found out he won't let it go for quite a lot of money, either.

so i need your help...i've tried so many alternatives, but here are the ones that are still up for grabs..please add further suggestions if you have them or let me know which you like best.

//www.michaelschneider.ca
//www.mikeschneider.ca
//www.schneiderdocumentary.com
//www.mikeschneiderphotos.com
//www.schneiderphotography.ca

i'm long winded and this thread is all about me, so i apologize...but your help is appreciated!

(oh, and don't buy all of these and try and sell them back to me please!)

//www.mikesoxlong.com (said fast) :D

but my second choice would be

//www.mikeschneiderphotos.com

//www.mikeschneider.ca
i like this one. i think that throwing the word photography in theremakes it too specific in case you ever want to expand your website one day.

for all of you non-canadians...does a ".ca" website seem weird?

I really need this to be internationally appealing and I just wanted to collect your thoughts...It's easy to remember for Canadians but others might not be as familiar with it...

Have you tried .net domains yet? I got mine for 15/year.
John Setzler has a .net domain, too.

Hmmm, of the options you have given I'd pay the $600 (but would hate doing so)

My full name as a domain name has gone too, but as I also like the idea of keeping domain names as short as possible I'm happy with colda.com (darren coleman).

Hi Mike,

While .ca doens't seem especially weird, I wasn't familiar with it either. I don't think that would be very important, though, because most of your likely viewers would either have your card or be clicking a link to the page, I would guess. Of the choices you posted, I would choose mikeschneider.ca.

I did find schneidermike.com to be available. You might also try using first and middle initials, such as mdschneider.com or whatever. I agree with maxj about not including the word "photography". Good luck!

Too bad about the .net . *.ca sounds okay to me. I'm not familiar with the domain, but it's not weird either. I like it better than .co.uk :)

To me a .ca website doesn't seem weird but neither does it give an international impression - if you know what I mean by that.

There is still something to be said for the good old .com

Also, if you're opting for .ca because the .com domain for the same name is already gone I wouldn't - your potential visitors will just end up at the other one by mistake.

If you can choose one that is available as .com and not too similar to what someone else already has, I would do that. You can always buy the .ca for the same name too and redirect one to the other.

I have to agree that "ca" is not weird at all. People are becoming more and more familiar with alternate domains. The actors and theatre people that I manage websites for all us "biz", and they don't have any problem with traffic.

I would have to cast my vote for the michaelschneider.ca or mikeschneider.ca whichever one you are most comfortable with for the "persona" that you want to project.

how much???
06/09/2005 09:23:30 AM · #14
It ended up being $20/yr...I got //www.thatcloudthere.com for $6.95 from 1&1 but the ".ca" websites seemed to be a bit more to register since only certain companies are able to do it...

I don't know...I know that dotster.com was $20/year and doteasy.com was $50/year...

Was going to recommend.

www.MIKESCHNEIDERPHOTOGRAPHY.NET

You're usually better of staying with .com, .net, .org
