Hey everyone,

I've been shopping for some new lenses recently and this particuliar one caught my eyes, especially with its recent winning streak with the challenges (macro mainly).

I have a 50mm 1.8, but i don't find it good for doing any kind of macro...

But i'm wondering if the 100mm macro is also good for Portrait?

Thanks for the help guys!

I actually just got this lens delivered to my house today. Been playing with it for the last hour or so and LOVE it!!! Took a few portraits with it and they look pretty good.

This is only my second lens other than the kit lens and what a huge difference in quality.

It is stellar. If you're looking for a lens to do both 1:1 macro and close-in portraits, this is an excellent choice. The only trade-off for portraiture is the fact that the focusing will be a bit slower than a standard lens, since it's a long-throw mechanism (needs to focus from a few inches ot infinity. There is a dual-range switch to help with this. It's really not that slow at all. It does need the (optional) hood, since the front element is not recessed.
Others will likely chime in and recommend the alternative Tamron 90 and Sigma 105 macro lenses. These are decent choices as well, but I believe you will find the Canon superior for:
- General build quality; it's near-L build
- USM focus, with full-time manual override
- Dual-range focus switch
- Internal focussing
- Will never need "rechipping"
- Higher resale value (not that they could pry mine out of my grasp!)
For the relatively small differernce in price, I recommend going with the Canon.

I also agree that the Canon 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro lens is a great lens for macro and can be used also as a portrait lens.
