Hi. I'm heading out on a trip into areas that don't have a regular power supply and would like to get a cheap laptop for backing stuff up. 14" screen (all I could ever need for this purpose), 1Ghz (faster than I would ever need), and something that has a long battery life.

Has anyone here been in a similar situation? What did you get?

Since it's only for backing up images over the course of the trip I figure I should be able to get something for a decent price, especially since I don't need anything too fast or with a lot of RAM. Thanks.

You might consider an X-drive or iPod or Archos Jukebox or similar device -- essentially a 5-20GB hard drive with inputs and batteries. This would save you money, if you can wait until you get home to edit the pictures.

you can't go straight from Camera to iPod...

I would suggest a cheap dell. I think the are selling inspirons for less than 900$

i bought a compaq for the same purpose. i did get one with a burner so i could easily burn my images onto cds. paid $850 after rebates at circuit city. if you just want storage, you might look into those other devices which i think cost $3-400.
