For the first few challenges I thanked everyone that left a comment on an entry. I have recently stopped doing that. My question is:

What is the general concensus around here? If you make a comment on a challenge entry would you like a cut and paste "thank you" pm or is just marking the comment helpful thanks enough?

For me just mark the comment helpful.

Just wondering everyone elses opinion.

I'm fine with just having the comment marked "helpful", if indeed it was. If I've said or done something out of the ordinary to help or make the photographer extra grateful, I don't mind a pm - but it's never expected.

Definitely not necessary, imo. Marking the comment as helpful is a great way to acknowledge receipt.

I consider marking the comment as helpful acknowledgment of receipt and appreciation for the time & effort it took to make it. I don't expect a PM in response (although on occasion if there's something to add or comment on additionally, it's cool). I do like knowing that my comments were useful, however, so the checkbox serves a valuable purpose. :-)

Seems like so far most agree with me.

How about favs?

I usually only comment if I really like the shot and if my comment was helpful than just checking the box is good enough for me. However, if my comment was not helpful, then I don't want the photographer to mark it helpful just because he/she wants to show that it was read.

I've begun to try to comment on those images that are most difficult for me to categorize (because I know that mine often fall within that realm). In doing so, I think I learn more about what I need to improve upon and what I truly like and don't. Therefore, I find every comment I receive helpful in some way. Granted, it's a tough pill to swallow when I get someone saying that they think my image is crap; but when I really break it down and examine what they said, 99 times out of 100 I can see their point. (Sad, but true...)

That's why I mark every comment I receive as relative, pertinent, and helpful. By knowing that I can't please every person all the time, I have a cushion of voting population that really will never agree with me - and that's okay. :-)

I don't send out thank-you pm's when I recieve a comment or am added to someone's favotites, I just think it's too tiring (i really have enough to do as it is), thus I don't expect to get one.
Instead, I usually put a comment at the end of a challenge onto my pic thanking everyone who commented. I have also put a 'thank you' on my profile page for comments, favs, views, etc.

I don't mind getting comments on my pictures good or bad but I do object to them when they are rude!! If my picture appears crap to them thats okay and I don't mind them letting me know but there are ways and means yeah? I don't mark comments as helpful that to me appear to be blatently rude but any that don't like my pics but tell me why I will always mark helpful cause that help me to learn

You don't send out a thank you when you get a fav as a photographer or a photograph. That is one thing I am sure to send out a personal thank you for. Someone likes your work enough to mark it as a fav and you don't have 2 minutes to thank them?

When I check off a photograph or photographer as a favorite it is not a favor to the photographer. I don't expect to get a thank you for it. When someone who I have great respect for checks me off as a favorite, I send them a note saying how excited I am that someone I have great respect for checked me off as a favorite. They didn't do it for me. Favorites are like bookmarks. They are there to help me find a shot again later that I really liked. They help me find a photographer who's work is impressive enough that I wanna be able to find them again easily. They are to me kinda selfish... Why do you need to thank me for being selfish?
