Last week I had two images I was considering for duotones. I knew one was more mainstream and would score better, but I ended up submitting the image that I liked better, knowing that it wouldn't do well. (it had two strikes against it from the start----1 a photo of one of my children and 2 a very unconventional portrait).

It scored better than I expected with just over a 5.0 and got 122 out of 147. I entered it because I liked how unusual it was.

I was wondering if anyone else has entered photos they knew would not score well, but did so because it was their favorite for the week.

JD, I really liked your 'portrait'.... it was different and I think that being creative should be rewarded. I thought it would have finished alot higher. As for submitting stuff that I like that I don't think will score well..... I tend to leave things to the last minute and then submit the best of a bad bunch..... the two times I have scored quite well here it was with images that I had taken well ahead of the deadline and that I was happy with..... you would think there was a lesson there for me wouldn't you?
Anyway, I really liked you portrait..... not sure I'd put it in my living room... but it was peretty cool!

I rated it very highly. I didn't have time to comment last week, but the only thing I don't really like is the eyes - maybe it would be better if they were closed? The detail on the lip scored it lots of plus points though.

In my early entries I often had a couple of shots to choose from, and probably chose the 'wrong' one a few times ... just to see how it would do. Nowadays I tend to focus much more on one idea and try to get that right.

I entered this shot knowing full well it went against all the basics by which people here judge photos. Out of focus, color cast, etc. But there's a certain something about the photo that I liked and had to share it.

I think the more unorthodox photos make for a nice variety. Hopefully the more of these that are entered will eventually change the way some people score photos.

Thanks for the comments...
I just entered another photo for Liquid that I don't think will do very well.
I didn't have time to get a shot together this week (had some great ideas, though). I entered a shot taken this week
that fits the challenge, but won't do well.
We'll see...

Your subway shot is very interesting. You are right, it goes against all concepts that will get you a good score at this site, but it is veryinteresting. It has a lot of energy.
Your shot that I like the best is Specks and the Universe! It's one of my favorites.

My liquid entry is getting a 4.8 right now. I have 15 comments, though, and they are all 8, 9, and 10's!! So once again, I've submitted an unconventional photo that is not scoring well, but I do have some fans!! LOL

well JD I often enter shots that I know won't do well with the mainstream DPC crowd and, like you, I do it cuz I just love the shot! BTW I gave you a 7 for your duotone! Toooooo funny not to mention technically high.

Here are some of my entries that I know would bomb (not to mention my current Liquid shot which is one of my alltime DPC favs and has a current score of 4.8 (and which you gave a simple comment of OUCH :)). There's this one and this one.
