my start menu is stuck at the top of my screen and i can't get it down! nothing earth shattering, just real annoying as my computer has also been rearanging icons, freezing up and being painfully slow. Any ideas? hate to bore ya w/ my pathetic little problems, but this is just irritating!

You might have spyware

Check out lavasoft and spybot search and destroy

If you want to buy a program, spy sweeper is highly rated

Is your taskbar locked?
Right click it and see if the "lock taskbar" has a check on it-- if so-- uncheck it, and drag it to bottom..

Hmm can't you just click and drag it down? I know you can do this on older windows versions than XP.

nope, it's not locked, and nope, can't drag it down, sadly :-(
I already restarted the computer and did a cookie/cache wash, and it was just defragmented yesterday. Anybody else have any ideas???

System restore to a save point before the weird stuff started. Also try Ad-aware and Spybot.

Starting the computer in safe mode resets the taskbar position.

What version of Windows are you running?

Are you running modification software (such as StyleXP) that modifies the user interface?

I see you have done the basics of organization maintenance (cookies, defrag, etc), but have you made sure your virus definitions are up to date (and scanned) and checked for adware?

Did you install any programs or let someone unusual use your system just before the problems started?

Did everything mentioned, and still, no improvement. It is still up there. I know my way around computers pretty well, and I have never seen anything like this. Perhaps it could be some Microsoft update, that you can't change (that has happened to a friend before, with some kind of browser setting). Is there anything I am missing?

you may need some serious cleaning of your PC.

go get adaware se and spybot S&D.

run those update and scan your system. if still having problems you may need some more firepower to get rid of the nasties.

try the Panda active scan (look for the free online version) you NEED to use Internet explorer for this scan to work.
Panda on line scan

Also download this and scan your system (its free)
Ewido Security suite

I have had great results from using these guys at Short-media.com(its totally free, look for my username there jab119), but you do need to sign up (again its totally free). Please follow the instructions there. they provide their help on their own personal time and they are very good at what they do and hate spyware/adware and virus more than we do.

create a different account that has administrator priviledges. delete your current account. Get your files and cookies and stuff moved to a safe location. think backgrounds, Desktop Icons & folders too. IE or firefox favorites are also somewhere in yourprofile, get them moved.

re-create your windows user account and stick all your stuff back. I bet you this will fix it.

I once had win2k remap some of my keys for no apparent reason and couldn't change them back. Doing this removed whatever hidden setting was horking the system.

This may not help, but try moving the start bar to the left or right side of the screen first, and then drag it to the bottom. For some reason that's what I've always had to do with mine. It won't allow me to drag it straight from the top to the bottom.
Good luck.
