I am looking for a more powerful flash but my camera does not have a hot shoe. I dont know a lot about flashes and such.. I am looking for something inexpensive... something I can use with my Fuji S5000... any suggestions?

A slave flash unit like This is going to be about your only option, since your camera has no coonnections for flash.

The lady who always takes photos next to me gets such great and bright photos and mine are all yellow and have very low light. also would her flash set off this wireless flash also? thanks for the help guys ;)

I purchased a Starblitz2800DSF Digital slave flash, it operates with a buit in slave, mount it on a flash bar to the tripod bush,. the flash cost $NZ 180.your buit in flash will trigger it.

Yes, they'd provide ample lighting. The advantage is also that you could place the slave anywhere around the ring you wanted, perhaps 2-3 of them.

The disadvantage is, yes, her flash will also trigger them. So you two would have to work out some kind of deal as to how to use them or when either of you is shooting. Perhaps she might like having the extra lighting.

If you're getting yellow tones, you might want to try a custom white balance. Read in your manual about white balance, then try it. You'll need to set white balance using a white sheet of paper or any white surface.

Edit: Also try shooting w/o your cameras built in flash. Flash range on onboard flash is usually not effective for more than 10 feet, but your camera doesn't know that the light isn't reaching the subject. Turn off the flash, open up your aperture and see what you get. There is a good chance of getting motion blur, however, especially if the light levels in the gym are low.

ProMaster has units that activate off your camera's speedlight. Usually around $170.00 US. May be the answer for you.

They do not work outdoors, but are very dependale indoors.

Yeah...definately try using custom white balance. I have no clue what the lights they use in gyms are, but they definately aren't a standard color temp. (tungston or flourescent). I don't take many shots in gyms, so when I do I usually just fix the color later, but if you're taking a bunch the custom white balance will save you a ton of work.

Incidentally, anyone know what gym lights are? I remember back in elementary and middle school if you went in the gym and turned them on it would take like 15 minutes for them to "charge up" and slowly brighten and the ones in our college gym, though I've never seen them turn on, definately have a wierd color temperature. Strange things...

Would they be sodium lamps?

Most gym lights I've seen lately are the big round lights not the long flourescent ones. I did try not using the flash and opening up the apeture but the images have too much noise. The lady next to me gets great shots with her Nikon but she has a hotshoe and a big ole flash unit. I will definitely try the white balance, I've always just left it on auto and buy a slave flash of some sort. Cheers to everyone for the info and happy holidays =o)

That at St Stephens? we didnt go to that one I don't think. Last weekend we were at East Meck and today they are at Mt Tabor. You had a great shot in the paper of Ryan White from the Trojan Duels. He is my boys partner at practice, kinda his mentor. I was in and out of the tournament so I missed seeing you, I was surprised when I saw your photo, nice job :) You should come to the match this tuesday at Bandys against Mooresville, we are 12-1 and they are a pretty good 3A team, starts around 6-7pm. Bandys has been state champs the last two years, so you might get assigned to the championships. My boy ranks in states (super 32 list on ncmat.com), hard thing to do as a freshman. (103 Jordan Armstrong) lookout for him if you go to any matches :)

I think I'll buy this, its for my camera and its black to match, does it seem like a good thing to you guys?... dunno about vivitar tho? and I can sell it with my camera when it comes time to move up to DSLR, if that time ever comes lol

Lol.. that wasn't my photo from the Trojan Duels... I know it had my name on it but I wasn't there. That was a sports desk mistake. Robert Reed shot those. I did cover the Indian Classic though...
