BUG CONFIRMATION AND SCOPE DESCRIPTION

We have confirmed the existence of a flaw in the DPChallenge voting mechanism that will cause comments and votes to DISPLAY incorrectly in some images while voting. In most cases, this is just a display error, but in a very small number of cases, those votes are recorded incorrectly.

This flaw most often occurs under the following scenarios:

1. Voting in multiple browser windows or tabs.

2. The "<<" button or the browser's "BACK" button is used while voting to go back and re-vote an earlier image.

3. Casting a vote, then re-clicking it or changing it before the next image appears, OR double-clicking rather than single-clicking while voting.

4. Changing votes from the thumbnail page.

A fix is being prepared. In the meantime, the following workarounds are recommended:

1. Vote in a single window or tab. Alternating screens while voting WILL trigger display errors.

2. Do not use the << or browser back buttons to go re-score an earlier image. Instead, return to the thumbnail page and adjust your score there (see also #4 below).

3. Once you have clicked on anything in the voting bar, do not click it again until the next image has loaded. If you need to change a score, go back to the thumbnail page to do so.

4. When changing scores from the thumbnail page, allow time between clicks to allow each individual change to be recorded. Ten seconds should be sufficient in most cases. Also wait about 10 seconds after making your final vote to refresh your browser. You can check whether your changes were recorded by refreshing your browser (again waiting 10 seconds after your last click to refresh).

Once again, the above are intended as temporary workarounds only. This will be repaired. Thanks for your patience.

~Terry

Thank you Terry for 1) Confirming the Bug; 2) Identifying when it occurs; and 3) Providing guidance for working around it.

Any idea the ETA for a fix?

No problem. Glad to help.

Not sure. I haven't talked to Langdon all day. I saw Drew for all of about 4 seconds as he was leaving work.

Sorry for the delay, but the following problems should be fixed, or rather you can now use the following features:

There's still a chance for multiple window/tab voting to corrupt the view (not misplace real votes). I will fix this in the next few days as time permits. As Terry mentioned earlier, votes were never wrongly recorded in the database. The problem was that the cached data was being corrupted by my crappy code. Thanks to those who helped reproduce and organize the bugs.

PS: Brett's a great tester and Terry, a wonderful organizer. :)

Confirmed I no longer have issues changing votes in any of those manners.

Also, the voting carries on properly after doing #2. It moves to an unvoted image instead of moving through the previously voted ones.

Thanks guys!

Thanks to everyone for being so patient about this, and especially to those who provided us the feedback to get the exact nature of the bug nailed down.

Hi. While voting on best of 2005 today, I got an error message "cannot register vote because you have multiple windows open while voting..."

....but I don't. I do have other browser windows open, but not to DPC.

IE 6.02

I was voting and found an error!!!
In the Fantasy challenge there are 108 pictures. When I go through voting for them all I vote for 107. Of course I dont vote for mine.
But.... Now when I go through all the thumbnailes to put some up and down and count them all, there are 4 missing pictures. I add all the 10s, 9s, 8s .... 1s and come up with 103 pictures. So... What is wrong?

Maybe they have been DQ'd?

If you click on the challenge title to go back to the main voting page then return to voting, does the problem go away?

Also, can you give us the exact sequence of steps necessary to duplicate the problem?

Who is your Internet Service provider, and is it dialup, DSL or broadband? Do you use any kind of web acceleration software?

Belated answer to ClubJuggle - the problem I described has not recurred. Thank you for responding.

Sorry to bug you once again but...

I was leaving a long CC style comment on an entry, and I lost the whole thing when I tried to finalize my comment and enter my vote. The page told me not to open multiple windows whilst I vote, which is silly because I did not have two windows open. The page seems to be timing me out even though I did not leave the page, or really stop typing for very long either.

I know most people don't do this, so it's not really a big problem for 99.9% of people out there. But for weirdos like me, is there something that can be done for this? I'm not sure I really want to re-write the comment now, so that person may lose out (or benifit because of :P ) this glitch.

Am I too late for the free 10 train?

-er, I mean awesome!

(In all honesty, I like seeing the site evolve! Makes paying for a membership more convincing... *smiles*)

Now I will be able to whiz thru the entries...Fantastic. I think this is one of the best "managed" web sites on the net!

I had a related problem to those stated as fixed earlier in the thread while placing some votes for Painting II. The sequence of steps was as follows:

- start at the image page.
- click on the first thumbnail.
- start browsing the images by clicking the next button (I didn't plan on voting, just looking).
- click thru a dozen or so in this manner.
- come across one I like, leave comment and vote.
- continue thru a dozen more images, now leaving votes and comments.
- on 14th image, after starting to vote, I open another browser to double-check the challenge discription.
- find that I agree the image has met the challenge discription, close the second browser window and write comment.
- when I place the vote (5 if it matters) the page load stalled and I reclicked the 5 to get it to load properly.
- it was then I noticed the message at the top of the screen that said I was unable to leave a vote for that image (my comment and vote were lost) - may have been present before reclicking.
- clicking the back button (browser) I re-entered the vote on the previous entry and was then forced to re-enter votes on all entries I had left votes on before I was given an image I hadn't voted on yet.

A couple of additional notes that may be important:
- IE 6.0.2900.2180
- WinXP Pro with SP2 and all updates
- I had 2 other instances of IE open, one to a DPC forum thread and another to ACD Systems homepage. These have been open for a couple of hours and are each from seperate instances of IE (that is, each was opened from the icon).
- the problem only occured after I opened another window in the same instance of IE I was using to vote (right-clicked on challenge title under image and open in new window).

Edited to add more info:
I went back to the challenge and voted a few more. The two browser windows are still open, untouched from earlier.

No problems voting until I opened another browser window in the same session (right-click, open in new). At this point I can confirm the error message was there after the first click earlier. It was the reload of the same image that caused me to think it was an error loading (the error message isn't very visible at the top with all the information below the image now.
No problems when opening another browser window from the IE icon (even when browsing DPC in that other instance).

David

BTW: I really miss the back and foward links at the top of the page where they didn't change position with the size of the image. They made it much easy to browse the images when not voting.

The added voting category is a nice addition. Most people will still probably choose the mixed comments category but having a no comments choice is great.

After reading many of the posts and concerns, it is amazing to see that something meant to be a good thing, can cause a negative reaction. Hats off to those who like progress. To the rest, lighten up!

Besides, the issue is not so much with what comments are made as much as what thoughts evoke a numeric score for a particular shot. There are many submissions that, to me, seem to be in the 8-10 range, that folks grade a 7 for. Constructive comments really can help to clarify the numeric scores.

Anyway, enough of my ranting. This is a great site with great photographers. It is a joy to visit and participate.
