I'm getting very mixed reviews on my photograph, and it isn't even controversial. Last night when I went to bed I had about 15 votes and I was at 6.33. Right now here are my stats:

Two of the commenters loved it, and the other guy said he gave it a 1.

Im not doing bad, but I was expecting a higher score, right now its all over the place.

I am in the same boat, I think voters are either really with it or really against it. Seems like a crazy challenge, which I would have never guessed.

Why oh Why If the number is going to be under a 5, cant someonr put a comment to give me a clue as to what is not liked?

I think if you are voting 5 or less it should be mandatory to comment, or your vote will not be accepted on that photo.

I've been surprised at how much people have apparently disliked my image. Submitting it I honestly thought it was my best entry to date, but I guess not. Hm.

Mine's a love it or...'hmmm, not sure about that one' shot

But after being just below 5, things are lifting:

People are voting much lower for this challenge - My score so far (luckily climbing) is just below 4???!!!!! - This is worse than my first entry into a challenge on DPC (that entry was grainy, blurry, out of focus, too small, bad colour etc)
My hands entry is a decent photo (not a ribbon, but I wouls say at least above 5).

Well I'm with you on this Tammy... maybe 4 is too high for a mandatory comment but certainly for 1's and 2's
I must admit that I am sometimse guilty of voting low without a comment myself... but since this challenge I will try harder... I guess we are all scared of offending, but in the end 'constructive' critism is what makes us better photographers...

Because some people have a problem with critisism and sometimes attack those who leave them. I haven't experienced this personally, but I have seen comments calling people stupid, ignorant, visionless trolls because they didn't feel the same emotions about a photo as the photographer.
And sometimes it might be because they figure it's already been said by other voters? If I vote late in the challenge and a pic is badly out of focus, for example, I may rate it lower but figure the photographer doesn't need a 25th comment telling him the same thing. :)
Having said this, I agree with you! How can we learn if people don't tell us??

Started out about 5 and a half and was satisfied...*sighhh...*
Tho' I did know this one would be a "love it or hate it" type, cuz it's definitely not "pretty", and the 4 comments HAVE been helpful, so it's fine... (as long as it goes up again ;) )

When I first logged on tonight I had 10 votes with an average of 2,876. Luckily after about 50 votes it has gone up to over 4.

This is by far the weirdest voting pattern ever. Started at 6.5 last night, dropped as low as 4.9 around noon today (pre-caffeinated voters?) and now it's back on the rise. I am afraid to post the numbers at this point. Bouncing all OVER the place.
What is going on?
03/22/2006 07:21:25 PM · #71
What's happened with all the other challenges I've entered is my score is at a high point initially, sinks down VERY gradually, and then towards the end climbs maybe 0.1-0.3 points.

This was just crazy. It started mediocre, PLUMMETTED, and now it's going up again relatively quickly. Still mediocre, but not too bad for me...

v5planet...that is EXACTLY what happened to me, too! Sharper nosedive than usual today...now back on the rise, just like yours.
Somebody was playing games on here this morning. I've entered several Challenges, and that was the steepest, quickest drop ever. Thank goodness it's going back up now.

I just peeked at the "Low Key" scores, and it seems they experienced the same voting pattern early today. Somebody suggested "trolls"?
I don't know exactly what that means, but it sounds about right. LOL

I have to admit, some of the comments I had received in previous comments were very discouraging to a person who is still learning. due to this I have participated in only a few challenges. I would welcome "constructive" critisim, but dont care for anything mean. But I will NEVER get better if nobody ever suggests avenues to improve. with such a wide aray of competant knowledge on this site it would be a blessing to those of us who are still learning.
