yes, those images clearly got across zeuszen's version of lowkey. then some of those same images were disputed by others, who offered different images.

Well I got it. Plus fotomann offered up and excelent technical description of low key. With zeuszen's exceptional images, the technical definition, the challenge description and the use of the histogram I dont see how one could say

"I didn't think that the threads here shed much light on the subject"

Its seems to be very clear.

EDIT: And then there is this Google Low Key

Look again at zeuszen's pictures. Very little light was shed on any of those subjects.

You, sir, have been gotcha'd.

So you are saying those images are not lowkey? Explain why.

they are low key. that's why so little light was shed.

and some day you're going to understand meanwile's joke.

I made sure my image met the challenge description AND the traditional definition of low-key. Score is showing, presently, I did pretty well.

I'm not complaining. :-)

I do wish the challenge description had been better written, though. FWIW, I'm voting more toward the traditional definition.

Great...the "1" voter just swung by my image.

Thanks for the comment, too. Oh, that's right, you didn't leave one.

I just have to leave one comment here:

Some photogs need to calibrate thier monitors. I'm prefectly calibrated and finding some of these images very hard to see.

This challenge is dark by nature. A too low contrast monitor might have hurt you. If you're struggling with the scores on this one, make sure to check out this graphic and calibrate your monitor.

Can you see each block as a seperate tone? If not, you may be getting popped for being too dark or too contrasty.

Not looking much better :(
Interesting to see the others are getting a hammering too.
Just wondering whether it is the photographers that don't meet the challenge, or the voters!

As I have mentioned in a previous thread, I think people entering the challenge are getting mixed up bewteen low-key and underexposed.

There are only a handful of photos that actually meet the challenge, and I think they will shine come next wednesday.

oh yeah, mine is shining... like a polished turd!

Not sure I understand the difference. I quote Tom Ang (Digital photographer's handbook 2004 pg 126) "For a low key portrait, all that is often required is low angle sidelighting, and enough underexposure to shift mid-tones into shadow areas."

But according to this, underexposure and low-key go hand in hand. Thus I would expect a spot-metering on a highlighted area, would cause mid-tone exposure on this area, thus rendering the rest of the image darker, and effectively underexposed... hence low key.

What am I missing? Would really appreciate some clarity if possible.

I'm at 5.6! Yikes! Sad sad sad..... but now I have made a decision. Yep. I thought a while back I would do my own kind of photography for DPC challenges but somehow it isn't working. My favourite kind of stuff doesn't really go down here, so from now on I will keep my kind of photography for other sites and get back into DPC friendly photos for here. Yep yep yep! So coming up is lots of Neat Image, lots of pretty stuff and lots of oversharpened and happy pretty photos <disappointment off/>
