what the hell were the americans doing today, i mean 3-0 they look disorganized and like they really didn't care that much this is the WORLD CUP and you have a lot to prove at least play like you care. Ghana can beat them and Italy will roll all over them if they play like that again.

At least its almost guarenteed that one of my passionate teams will make it through US or Italy, but now they both can't :(

Ya, it's pretty well win-out for the US. Lose, and they are done. They looked pathetic, really.

Italy, however, didn't look that great again Ghana either. Ghana likely could have had 1 or even 2 penalty kicks in the second half and really were able to challenge Italy on offense.

We shall see...but it looks grim for the US.

Very grim indeed. I am bitterly disappointed. Where's this much-ballyhooed all-out, attacking style we were supposed to be an example of?

Admittedly, the US played like crap, but, the Czech team is ranked #2 in the world. The US also has the misfortune of being in a very tough bracket, which means they need to bring their "A" game to every game and not be squabbling with each other like they were in today's match.

Tough loss which will probably lead to an 0-3 record or at best 0-2-1.

Hey listen its only a game. Englands only goal came from a Paraguay defenders own goal. All is not lost my American friends.

I don't think the US team played like crap. There were moments of decisive tackling and when going forward, the team created some chances. Reyna in particular had a couple of good shots that came very near to getting onto the score tally.
The simple fact is that the Czech Republic played like stars and managed to control the game. Great individual skills (Rosicky and Nedved really took the game into their own hands) and solid work from the back line really made the difference. With this new ball, it's also likely that midfielders with some control could really score scorchers, and Rosicky did that.
I think as the players get more ideas with the ball, we'll be seeing more and more nice long-range goals, and defenders are going to have to be more pro active in shutting down approaches from the midfield.
The Czech play I thought also demonstrated something that I think is a key point in the game. Too many teams are content with scoring one goal and then defending their half, instead of continuing to apply pressure and going forward. Nedved and co didn't do that, kept up the pace and scored more goals, which is great to watch...

But they didn't play well.
At all.
Even Bruce Arena admitted so (from SOCCERNET).....

"U.S. coach Bruce Arena ripped into his players after they were thrashed on the pitch by the Czech Republic on Monday and singled out his key player Landon Donovan for an especially harsh public tongue-lashing."

and

"I am very disappointed by the performance of our players over 90 minutes. "

Yes, USA is/was somehow ranked #5, but it seems a pretty universal opinion that they were way overrated, even before the match with the Czech team. Top-ten maybe, certainly top-twenty, but prolly not #5.

Had they dominated the Czech team the way they got dominated by them, the probably would have justified being ranked #5 even when very few thought they should be ranked that high.

Arena's blaming the attitude of his players is the worst part of this loss. The US earned the # 5 ranking because of the reckless counter attacking offensive style of play, springing a streaking forwards out of a pressing trapping defense. Yesterday Beasley was playing on the wrong side of the feild, and none of the halfs were leaning froward, the play all moved backward, instead of playing to Donovan's quickness or McBride's range.

These are flaws that can be corrected, the fact that the USA has no superstars means that the players are pretty balanced and the squad can present diffent looks, they can stil give the Italians as much as they can handle. Totti's bruised knee looked good against Ganah, and he is a dangerous weapon, but if he isn't at the top of his game the USA will advance out of the bracket with the Czecks. Though most Europeans are not willing to credit the team with being very good because of the name on the uniform they are ranked four places above the Italians because of how the two teams played in qualifing matches. Ya, they looked bad against the #2 team in the world, but don't write them off quite yet.

Which teams did the USA play against in their qualifying matches to gain their 5th ranking?

When you have a group like this...
4 teams on the world cup out of 6, something's wrong there...
Australia, for example had to be the first in Oceania and than play against the fifth team in South American zone. It's a long way!

And on the other hand, Serbia was the first in our qualifying group, ahead of Spain and Belgium
Serbia and Montenegro 10 22
Spain 10 20
Bosnia-Herzegovina 10 16
Belgium 10 12
Lithuania 10 10
San Marino 10 0

and as the winners of the group we were supposed to be in the first draft round with other winners of the groups from Europe. Due to some stupid politic we not only lost the first place but also the second and got Argentina and Netherlands. Not to mention Ivory Coast...

Of course the Europeans feel that this is a weak group, in much the same way that Americans look at basketball played in Europe. They are now 1-1-1 after the American loss.

On the other hand, as far as rankings go, the Dutch looked great. So unless Brazil decides to crash their bus on the way to the pitch it looks like the Top 3 teams all will have very good showings. It gets a bit dodgy after that.

It will be a good game on Saturday with both Italy and the US seeing it as a "must win" game. Italy could lose and then beat the Czech Rep I guess, but they aren't gonna want to do that...
