Well, it's that time of year again here in CowTown, Alberta. This morning was the parade and for the first time I had a dSLR in my hands and wasn't in a store! I rented a D100 and used the 70-300 lens I bought a couple weeks ago and man oh man. If I thought I was eager to have a dSLR before, I'm screwed now!

But that's besides the point. First I'm wondering who else is taking in the Stampede these next couple weeks and who else in the rest of the world has similiar things going on in their town/city this summer.

I'm definitely looking forward to getting to some of the small towns around Calgary for chuck races and rodeos to get some more pictures.

Man am I ever screwed! I'll post a few of my favs when I get home from work. I'm actually shocked and just HOW MUCH BETTER they really are!

Good old Calgary (my birthplace)...has two seasons...winter and Stampede Week.

I'm rather jealous, I wasn't able to get time off work to shoot the parade this morning (I'm on a 5 minute coffee break now). This would have been my first DSLR parade as well and I imagine I would have been equally excited.

I do hope to hit the Stampede at some point, not so much for the rides but for the Western Photo Showcase and the general plethora of excellent candid shots. Failing all else, I'll hit Scotsman's hill for some night shooting (rides and fireworks).

If you're looking for good fireworks photos, hit Tom Campbell hill above the Calgary zoo. Have your long lense on the camera before you head up (unless you want your camera to become home for a portion of the mosquito clouds... on that note, bring a couple cans of OFF).

As for the towns around Calgary, the summer rodeos should be an excellent opportunity for some photos. I hadn't thought about that and now I'm left thinking about how I'll hit a couple of those.

Looking forward to those photos.

I am making the journey from Edmonton to Calgary this weekend. Not sure if I will get a chance to hit the stampede. Who knows I might. :-) If anyone is going Saturday night send me a private email and we might get a chance to meet up. I am already booked up for Sunday afternoon

@Achoo, Yup! 2 seasons. It hailed (as big as 2 in diameter!) for about 20 to 30 minutes last night and rained for another hour after like it was a second flood. It was absulutely beeeeautiful today though!

@ Jesus, Jealousy will get you everywhere! It was my most enjoyable parade in my life. Any guesses why? I took over 500 pics in 2 1/2 hours and didn't even get all the ones I wanted to take. Oddly enough I live a 5 minute walk from Campbell's Hill and can see the fireworks from my lawn though through some wires. I'm actually going to hit the Bridgeland Comm. Centre tonite before taking the camera back in the A.M., and yeah, damn mosquitoes!

Fox, I try to avoid the stampede days cuz it's just waaaay too expensive. I might get in a couple grandstand nights if I can find money and time for that.

I hit up the stampede parade this morning as well, I moved to calgary last summer just after the stampede ended so this is my first stampede week. The lighting this morning was rather harsh though I found, bright sun and dark shadows, so I can't say that I enjoyed taking many pictures at it, but I didn't buy all of this photo gear for nothing :)

You can find a picture and a small rant on my photoblog:

More pictures from the parade to follow shortly.

p.s. don't get the wrong impression from the short rant, it's meant to poke some fun at the hysteria, I really do love this city.

Since you live in Oregon now...have you been to the Pendleton Round-up? It's suppose to be a pretty big to-do.

Finally, I managed to sit and edit a few. Yes, they are underexposed but what can you expect when the parade comes in from the same direction as the sun. Still, I'm thrilled with how they all turned out.

Lots more to come later tonite so stay tuned. For now, there are 6 or so HERE

Not bad for a first time dSLR user? Or do I still blow chunks?

I find Stampede a lot mroe fun than Mardi Gras. Every time I have been it has been a most enjoyable time. Need to go again sometime. Maybe next year.

Wow, I didn't realize there was a Calgary contingency here! haha
I'm originally from Calgary myself and miss it quite often... Very nice shots Steve :)

Yeah, I'm finding more and more of them coming out of the woodwork and almost as many ex-Calgarians. Thanks for the boost C-town.

I was born in Olds and my sister still lives in Calgary.
One of my earlier memories is of overcoming my fear of thunderstorms. We drove to Calgary the night before the parade and stayed in a hotel, and it stormed that night, one of the biggest my dad ever saw, and he was born and raised in Alberta.
So I sat on my dad's lap at the window and we watched nature's fireworks together. I don't remember much of the parade the next morning, but the storm impressed me!
About the only other thing I remember was watching Roy Rogers and Dale Evans perform :)

It seems every year since I've moved here (7 this year) it's stormed the night before the parade. This year we had literally 20 minutes of hail and then 30 or rain. It was ridiculous! It's doing it again tonite but without the hail. At least in my end of town.

Just so long as it doesn't flood like it did last year!

Shhhh...not so loud. I started at a Stampede breakfast on friday morning and didn't get home until noon or so on saturday. And that's generally deemed a tame one around here during Stampede week.

thank goodness i'm going to Germany to hang with Kiwi on wednesday so I can slow down a bit. Unfortunately i'm at another stampede event all day tuesday (that begins with pitchers of vokda/OJ for breakfast at 8am). I'm already packed and fully expect to go directly to the airport at 8am wednesday.

the hail just started down south...

And more tornado warnings to boot. Gotta love Calgary weather in the early summer. Pine Lake has a tornado watch. The clouds like nasty!

Going to Germany to hang out? Nice. Lucky bugger. And with Kiwi? Dang!

Hey Sea2C, I actually caught the stampede parade for the first time this year, mainly because it may very well be my last year here!

It was cool, took my nephew so it was that much better. And yea, I had no idea there were so many cow-pokes aroundl. If you get a chance (and if it's not too late, can't remember the date..and no I didn't mean for that to rhyme) check out the Water Valley Rodeo.

P.S. I'm probably the only sober person left in this town...and there's only room for one of us so it's a good thing (that's a John Wayne reference...okay, it was obscure.....)

In my opinion Calgary Stampede is a ten-day event, which attracts over one million visitors per year and features one of the world's largest rodeos, a parade, midway, stage shows, concerts, agricultural competitions.
