What DrAchoo and a few others said
I forgive Rikki
It doesn't help me in any way to hold bitterness toward him
One year ban is plenty and it is and should be a deterrent
Rikki has punished himself for long enough
He would have carried around a terrible feeling in his heart
There is no joy in getting ribbons etc. when you know yourself you didn't earn them
I don't think the site has suffered too much
People will cheat in all sorts of ways when there is a competition
This site has caught another and dealt with him appropriately
We all have, and do cheat in some way, some where in our lives.
For an amount of time we deny or justify it.
Most of us have been given another chance at different times and quite often been smart enough to learn.
I hope others here can forgive Rikki and let him return for there own sakes.
He would still be punished then purely by the lack of trust he could never regain here
I do feel sorry for those who have suffered through Rikki's actions and you will have to dig deepest to forgive if you choose to.

so how many others are in the club of getting their first ribbon in such a bizarre way.....

'The London Eye' needed to get 2 DQs to get its yellow :)

Woah.. I'm shocked..
His was the last profile I saw last night.. I was even going to pm him about a pic today..
Now I feel sad.

Edit:: You guys 'are' sure that the ghosts weren't the trolls for the best of the competition

Rikki.

You must be feeling awful for bringing yourself in this mess. But we all do mess up our lives at some time or other, it is called life. And the lessons in this school of life are often harsh. We learn from it, and in that way our mistakes bring something good with them. You are human, so are we.
Please return when this ban is over, many of us will be glad and I do hope that is what counts. Remember, you are a talented photographer.

Stay safe and take care.

I was in 4th place in the Abstract Food challenge, when the photo in first place was disqualified, both Rikki and I moved up...him to second, me to third. Now, with Rikki dqed, I have a RED. Not the best way to get them, but nonetheless, like your London Eye shot, bizzare!

Sad to here of Rikki's error of judgement, his confession and apology,as well as his self exil, following the councils Action,as mentioned befor it is up to the rest of the members to pull together, and keep DPC the effective photographic site it is. Rikki's understanding of photography was well accepted and liked, and will be missed,by many of us who enjoyed his character.

On A lighter note 1 years suspension for all voters who give an image a 1 0r 2.... ducks and runnnsss for the hills.

He accidentally forwarded his entry to 30 people over 40 times? I'm not quite sure how that works.

Looking at some of the member's challenges where Rikki participated, he wasn't doing all that well although his entries were always of good quality. Looking at the open challenges however, he ended in top 3 and in many instances in top 10.

Systematic and deliberate cheating. If you forward your challenge entries for your friends to look at, should be done after the voting, if not you are soliciting votes, simple as that!

You echo my thoughts exactly!

About the rest? There is not enough fact revealed in this thread to draw a suspicion, let alone a conclusion of quilt. I for one will reserve judgement on him until I have enough evidence to warrant it -- even though that will likely never happen.

To Rikki:
Come on back when your year is up, ask for your account to be reinstated and do your best to earn the trust of the site that becomes so important to anyone who spends any time here. I for one will be glad to see you return.

Losing the trust of those you value is rough on a person -- but it is no where near as rough as living with never having tried to regain that trust. Sure there will be those who will never let you try, who will never trust again; but they are usually the ones who never trust to begin with. If the trust was ever there to begin with, it can be regained.

So come on back in a year and take your place at DPC again. State your peace and tell your side if you've a mind to -- or not. After the punishment has been served the crime is balanced; justice served. All that is left is making amends -- which I feel is the only way to mend what you're feeling now.

I note his account has been cancelled. Can we not at least have it "inactive" as there were some great images there. Rikki was one of my favourite photographers and while the scores for many may have been incorrect it doesnt change the fact they were good photos.

The account was cancelled at his own request.

I'm at kind of a loss as to why some would feel sorry for Rikki.
If he didn't know it was wrong, that's one thing, but he did, and was adult enough to make that decision.
I don't habor hate & discontent for someone, and certainly wouldn't hold a grudge, but to feel sorry for a cheat doesn't work in my book, no matter who it was.
For members to regain his trust, well, that will be up to each and every person, but in context of this site, I imagine that will take a very long time.

Yeah we have all done stupid things in our lives.
We moved on, as this site will too.

I'm stunned to say the least! Rikki of all people. Some of his photos were gorgeous. But life goes on and I joined DPC to learn to take and process better photographs for myself.

I love looking at all the photos for each of the challenges - they inspire me (and sometimes don't) and encourage me to 'look outside the box' with my ideas.

Although I regularly browse the forums I haven't joined in much as I feel I still have so much to learn and therefore am not really qualified to say much or vote for that matter. But I have noticed some member(s) 'encourage' their friends to vote their picture higher in their local competitions and some have even posted a picture on a forum for comment and then entered that same photo into one of the challenges ...

I forget who said this on this thread but 'my stone is firmly at my side' ...
07/31/2006 06:06:16 AM · #265
I'm Not stunned at all. I was looking at his winning entries and noticed a disproportionate number of 10's...well above the numbers of 9's, that went againt the normal vote curve.

I mentioned it to people in DPC Chat around a month or two ago, as well and to one other person in a PM. I thought that I might just be dellusional so I figured I'd let it drop.

I hate conspiracy theories and I didn't want to start one myself but I'm thrilled to death to find that I wasn't crazy...well, not totaly crazy.

I'm posting to get this off my chest. (I'm a member too ya know) This was a very hard thing for SC to deal with. It took days of discussion and research, and we spend even more time with the headache and heartache of 'what now' and how to go about everything.
I went through initial shock, to anger, to tears.
I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that I've shared some happy moments with Rikki, and I feel like I've lost a good friend here. Having to do this to a 'good friend' was an aweful feeling. (there's where the tears come in)
However, I'm angry that he would do this and very hurt that he would do this to the community. Maybe being on SC and spending so much time trying to protect the members and maintain order made it feel like a personal attack to me.

Anyway, I think I'm finally stuck at 'hurt' and to that I say 'Goodbye Rikki'

Guys honest, if you suspect someone you really need to report it. I told pawdrix weeks ago to report his suspicions to SC. He decided not to because he was afraid he might be wrong.

All cases of alleged vote tampering are investigated. It's really rare to get this level of organized tampering. If you have suspicions- tell SC. You won't be starting a witch hunt.

I was uncertain but now I feel bad.

I had no info to back it other than the numbers that we all could see but no way to actually prove anything was fishy.

I thought DPC might have been working a little too hard on my brain or maybe I was tired...even paranoid. I should have said something. My bad.

Rikki has obvious talent, but not such good judgement. I have trouble with the "it was not my intention" though - what did he think was likely to happen when he showed his friends that had DPC accounts his challenge entries?

Sounds like prolonged, planned, systematic cheating IMHO.

Site integrity? Well I suspect most of the constant winners on this site. Atleast I did, a while ago when I stopped submiting I don't exactly know what's going on here lately. Even if most don't do it in purpose and so obvious as Rikki did, some people had became stars of this site, especially by being verry vocal in the forum, and they were shooting the same picture the same verry recognizable style, some even used a unique recognizable TITLE for theyr images, and as all stars in this world they have a fan club. I know there is no way to prevent or stop this, but to me it became obvious I can shoot anything if I don't become popular person I don't have any chance.

I don't know how it is right now, I stopped submiting long ago, but when I decided to stop it was like that. Lots of people voting the verry recognizable popular photographer instead of the actual picture. I don't have any proof for it, but to me it was verry obvious. Then again there is always a chance I was being paranoid. This thread kinda reasures me I was not not.

Okay, there's a WORLD of difference between recognizable style issues and ORGANIZED vote tampering. If you know or suspect anything of the latter, please make a point of saying something.

If you can come up with a productive was to address the former, I'm sure SC and the admins would love to hear it. :)

at my work, all computers go thru an isp scrambler of some sort and it appears as one computer leaving our office (i think). How do we know 30 different people were actually voting. And even if they were, they obviously not voting how they truely feel. Keep they're votes would be bad, in my opinion.

It seems more believable to me that Rikki created 30 accounts and voted 30 times himself from work. Do we know that this is not true?

Yep, that could certainly do it.

I'm not sure. Ofcourse there is a difference, as I said, some don't do it as organized as rikki did, but if we are speaking about site integrity, it's not much difference. Anything that makes the site being about people instead of photography ruins site integrity in my view.
