I find all this profoundly depressing. I find it depressing that Rikki, a well-respected site member, did this at all, of course. I am shocked and appalled by that. It makes me wonder all sorts of things about him and his work; is it all his? Is it all done by the rules? And so forth and so on.

But I'm almost equally depressed by this strong current of sympathy or support for Rikki that I keep seeing popping up in this thread. It seems totally out of place to me. Maybe I'm just a hard-ass, I don't know...

I've tried to stay outta this for several reasons. However, I have to jump in here... What exactly would this accomplish?

Well, for one thing, it'd let us know the difference between someone who just left and someone who was suspended or banned.

For another, it'd let people know who cheated. I've gotten to know several folks here over the past couple of months, and if any of them are cheaters, I'd like to know it.

I don't think that those who break rules aren't entitled to anonymity.

That said, between your post and this response, several SC members have clarified some things and given their reasons for not revealing names.

I still disagree with them, especially with regard to Rikki's name; it's not obvious to everyone who it was, and without reading this thread, many people won't know what happened. I even started a thread to ask, but if I hadn't, I don't know that I ever would've known. I just would've figured one of the photographers I respected chose to leave.

I actually agree with someone's suggestion that Rikki's profile (not pictures) be left up with a special notice alerting people what happened.

I mean, when prominent folks in other realms get caught cheating, do we hide their names?

However, I'm not going to gripe about it. I asked, they answered, 'nuff said. :)

Don't get too excited just yet. I think the recalculation will be running for a while in the background, and some placements could still shift.

I'm a glass half full kinda guy...maybe I'll move up to a blue now!
Just kidding!...just trying to lighten things up a bit

My question is about the other 30 or so accounts. They HAD to vote 20% or more for their votes to count toward Rikki's score. Will those vote be wiped from our scores as they may have voted others low?

Remember that DQ'd images are still listed at the end of the challenges.

Is this more widespread that we think?

PS...thanks SC for moving my last entry in ABSTRACT FOOD up to red ribbon status! woo hoo. I went from 4th to third last week, now this...

We occasionally receive requests to investigate suspicious voting. Nearly all of those cases turn out to be without merit. This is orders of magnitude larger than anything previous.

We have no reason to believe this is a widespread problem.

we've answered this, but to repeat:

the voting patterns of the ghost accounts were not abnormal other than the fact that they always voted highly on the one user's entry. therefore, the votes will not be removed.

i'm not sure why some of the placements seem to be shifting. we will have to wait for langdon's return to explain it all.

There was nothing unusual about their other votes cast.

I don't appreciate or deserve this kind of personal attack. I stated very clearly that I agree with the SC decision and that I don't approve of or condone Rikki's actions. But Rikki is my friend and I don't like people jumping on him when he's down because of a mistake that he made. I would hope that you have friends who would do the same for you.

If you have an opinion about this matter, then you're free to express it. However, if you feel like attacking other site members over their opinions, then I strongly suggest that you keep it to yourself.

ditto.

what did he steal? TRUST! drink a beer with him? sure. trust him? that's a whole different thing...

Perhaps (this whole topic is) related, perhaps not.
Let's see if the TROLL VOTES diminish, or not, for they are illogical.
(Sometimes, it just "feels like" something like this is in motion...)

Rikki - this makes no sense, you have the talent as is. Your pictures are excellent. See you when you return.

We'd always like to think that some people can learn their lesson and return with honesty and respect. Lifetime bans are reserved for those who prove otherwise.

right now we (SC) are not sure what's happening. langdon set up a script to remove rikki's open entries, and other things seem to be happening inadvertently. i'm sure it will all get straightened out soon.

Sad, Thats just really what it is. I don't understand why some resort to such behavior. Reading through the post some say its a nothing, and the votes were barely swayed. Its cheating never the less, be it having a 'voting pool', changing the EXIF data, Or even lying about that the actual photographer took the picture. Its just a part of life I guess, that someone will try to buck the system for their our personal gain or bragging rights. Glad it was caught, and I can continue to submit photos on a level playing field. Thanks to the Admins and SC!

the problem is philip, he didn't make a mistake. he went way beyond making a mistake. a mistake is something you do once and learn from it--it's not repeating itself until you get caught...

Nope - Honor & Ethics are involved (see my response)

I still think he needs a good old-fashioned ass-whoopin'.

I asked CJ twice and he opted not to answer so perhaps you can...why is exif falsification not something that people can "learn their lesson from" but massive cheating is? I'm just curious as it doesn't make a lot of sense from this side.

Rikki was one of the first photographers I added to my favorites list. When I started reading this thread I got this sick knot in my stomach like you get when you hear news you don't want to hear. I suspect that is going through everyones gut right now and would liken it to finding out your favorite sports star was caught cheating.

I think the penalty fits although I will miss his photographic work and comments. I can't imagine what he is going through right now and I would hope that this was something that just got out of hand on his part and that he will learn and grow from it. And I look forward to him coming back after his suspension.

Ugh... now I'm going to bed.

sc...I think I jumped from yellow to red cause Rikki had the red with his mushroom shot. Nothing else of mine has moved.

That's a good question and I personally don't see a difference. Would be curious to know why there is a difference.

as a programmer I'd just like to say that when people are using an application while these types of recalculations are being done, they should be prepared to see all sorts of wackiness until it's finally finished and confirmed. I'm sure it's only langdon's respect for all the dpc addicts that keeps him from blocking the site until he's finished.

Gotta go with skiprow here - this is waaaaaaaaaaay beyond a mistake in judgment. This is a constant and repeated attempt to disrupt the integrity of the entire site. Constant. Repeated. Deliberate. Over a loooooong period of time.

Sorry, sir. IMHO, this was no mistake.
