I have a ford focus 2002 and the motor blew a few months ago. Before that time I was getting around 24 to 26 miles per gallon. But now that they have replace the motor with a used one (20,000 +/- miles on it) my gas mileage has dropped dramatically. I have filled up about 10 times to calculate the MPG from the receipt and it shows me getting about 13 to 16 mpg. The tank is a 13 gallon tank and I'm only getting about 170 to 210 miles per tank.

Any suggestions. The motor has a one year warranty. Or could it be as simple as a tune up?

However If it were me I would take it back to where the work was done and ask them. There maybe an adjustment they forgot to make.

The only answer is the garage who undertook the replacement, the warranty should cover any faults on the work done, and that mpg is totally unacceptable.
Go back to them.

To calculate your mileage, did you fill the tank to full, then reset your trip odometer. drive for a few days or until the tank neared 0...stop at the gas station, record the # of miles driven, fill the tank up and divide the # of miles driven by the gallons of gas it took to fill it up?

Sounds to me like you're dividing 170 and 210 by your tank's capacity which probably has a few gallons left over when that needle is on or near the E line.

My suggestion is to use the above method, then get back to us once you've determined your actual miles per gallon.

The gas gauge on my focus is all but useless, I can fill my tank to the top, and it will never go over 3/4. If I stopped and filled it when the needle hit "E", I'd be getting about 170-200mi per tank. If I drive until the light comes on, I'll have gone about 265mi.

' MattO, but when my fuel milage dropped dramatically a couple months ago it turned out to be a sensor that tells how much fuel to shoot in. It cost me about $300 to fix. I don't know if this is something they would replace with your motor or not.
