Basically my school asked me to open a photography club. This may be weird to some but in our case we're pretty used to having our administration ask us to do favors for them that they cannot provide, missionary schools in Turkey usually do not have that much money.

And being the suck-up that I am, I was unable to bring myself to saying no.

It's not gonna be just for students either, teachers and other members of the community seem very interested in joining.

Here's my turmoil, I have no idea how to go on about with this project. What should I do? I've never taken photography classes nor really have paid any attention to how teachers start their classes. So I'm kinda lost.

All I'm asking is for teachers, for experts and for anyone who has any idea to help me out, give me a hand.

How do I start the class? What do I teach them first? Do I ask them to bring materials? etc. etc.

I'm in a serious rut and I need your help.

I'm confused.

Is it a club or is it a course?

A club is member driven so you can get ideas from those who are interested in joining. You don't need to do it all yourself.

For a club you can bring in guest speakers to talk on different subjects related to photography.

Outings, workshops etc. could be organized for those interested. Again, you don't need to do this yourself. You can get members of the club to participate in the organization and presentation of the outings/workshops.

Since it's a school project it's not gonna be all that professional. I hope.

But I think they're thinking something more like a course. The name is gonna be club, but I should start off by teaching and see where that takes us.

I think maybe the trick is to form a club, get people with similar interests together, share pictures, maybe have some sort of monthly contest (again, so that people share one or two pictures)

Then find the people in that group with the knowledge, and get them to teach intro classes to build up your membership & get new people.

I'm no expert but here's how our club is run:

We meet twice a month. On our first meeting, each member is allowed to bring up to six images to be judged according to category (Humanity, Traditional, Creative, Photo Travel, Nature, Prints). The judging is done by three members of the club, different ones each time. We have a scoring machine so each judge scores the image on a scale of 1-5 and the cumulative score is recorded. At the end of the year, we tally the scores and the top percentage are allowed to enter the year-end contests which are judged by an outside judge. We have a few judges for different categories and they determine the placements for prizes. It's not necessarily the best method but it works. I know a number of the larger clubs around here have outside judges for every meeting. That's great if you have a large number of contacts in the photo community but also a pain to arrange.

Our second meetings are pretty open. Sometimes we have a guest speaker who can give a tutorial or someone who's been on a trip or has a specific body of photos that are interesting to share. Sometimes we shoot for a topic and share those images. Sometimes we do a field trip. We're kicking off next year with a three month tutorial on digital for our members who are just starting.

What I'd do if I was just starting is advertise and see what kind of interest you can pick up. I don't know how formal you want to be but most clubs around here have a board of president, vp, secretary, treasurer, salon coordinator, etc. If you can get enough interest, elect those positions. Work with the people interested to come up with a plan for your club based on what people want to do.

Are there any other clubs in your area? That can be a good way to get started and they may be able to help you with connections, etc. We're lucky enough to have 12 clubs just within the two cities here so we have a special organization consisting of representatives from all of those clubs. It's a great way to get connections, etc., without having to fight your way through it.
