Hi Y'all Fellow D80er's,

I'm trying to set up a new Team for Nikon D80 users.
I noticed that D80's are quite new and that none of the
owners have won a ribbon yet ( using the D80 )
I am hoping that we can get together and share our
knowledge about the camera, it's lens, and accessories.

I've also purchase several photography and Photoshop CS2
instructional DVD's which I would love to share with the group.

My ultimate goal is to bring this group's photo a few notches up
and hopefully win a ribbon or two.

PM me if you are interested.

-krgl ( Kyle )

Hello to all

langdon was kind enough to move this thread from the members area to the (public) Side Challenges and Tournaments area, so that me, a humble registered user, can post! (-:

I believe we can improve our photographic skills even more by participating in this team.

Good luck to all!

First member of this team to Ribbon has to buy everyone else on the team a beer, kind of like getting a hole in one in golf.

That sounds like a great idea, Matt.
So did any one of you tried overlaying RAW images
with your D80 yet ? I did one and it is quite cool.
A bit time cosuming but the result rivals a HDR shot.
try it out !

I'm assuming at this point krgl is the team captain. Your email address is needed to sign up. Is everyone going to attempt to participate in the WPL? Very few spots left and we need to be quick if we're going to make it in.

I signed up earlier today and gave them my e-mail address :
kylerayner@pipeline.com

No pressure at all, compete if you want to.
Remember : Team D80 have no rules !!!!!!

This is the reply I got, so we're on the waiting list I guess.
Will keep you posted :

Hi,
Thank you for signing up your team. At this point all team slots are full.
However six teams are incomplete. They have till January 14th, 2007;
24:00:00 hrs to complete their team. If any team does not complete their
team by the deadline, their team will be removed and your team will move
from the waiting list to the slot the incomplete team had to resign.

You can view the list at www.wpleagues.com and click on the WPL4 Teams link.
If you have any questions feel free to contact me.

regards,
SDW

Hey hey! Glad to be part of the team! I'm just getting back to school and settled in, but I'll hopefully get some new photos up soon. This should prove a great resource for all of us getting started with this new camera.

What kind of camera did everyone use before the D80? I was shooting with the original Digital Rebel and the D80 has been a HUGE upgrade.

Looking forward to buying everyone a beer soon...

I was using the Nikon coolpix for most of my shots, and yes the D80 is a HUGE leap for me.
01/05/2007 03:04:50 AM · #16
I used the Olympus C-760UZ for a couple of years. I tried a couple of DSLRs (Sony a100, Olympous E330, Nikon D70) before I settled with D80.

I believe thought that at the DSLR world the most important part of the equipment is the lens and not the body. Anyway, for now I have the kit lens 18-135mm and a 50mm/f1.8 I borrow from time to time from a friend.

Kyle, cool image, I am really getting into HDR, using Photomatix, tell me how you did that shot? If I remember, you can overlay images with the D80, but just two correct? Also, tell me about your workflow, mine is screwed up as a can of worms. I have Capture NX, DXO Optics, Lightzone, running on an iMac. Currently I transfer to Picture Project, pick out some good ones, run through DXO, unless I forget to, and edit in NX. I just got Lightzone so I have no idea how to use it until I read the manual. I would like to get a set procedure down, any ideas would be appreciated. Any you folks do your own printing? Currently using Fred Perrine in Virginia, but thinking about doing my own, looking at the Epson 3800.

I actuually combined 5 RAW format images, 1/3 ev diff. each, inside the Nikon D80 camera and did the rest with PS CS2. I was looking at the Epson 3800 as well but I want to have at least 100 photos that I like before I make the purchase.

I print on an Epson R1800 that, rather unfortunately, has a continuous ink system. The ink is damn cheap, about 1/8th the regular cost, but the color and saturation suffer and b/w is impossible without red tones. I print so much for school (Graphic Design) that it's a necessary sacrifice.

On another question topic, are people here on Macs or PCs? I've always been on a PC, but I'm getting a Mac since it's the Graphic Design standard.

Mac is the way to go, you will never go back to a PC. My wife uses an HP laptop, less than one year old, good machine but the OS(Windows XP)is shakey. I made several picture albums for Christmas, using the album feature in iPhoto, and was amazed how easy it was and how well they turned out.

I'm using a PC but I think eventually I will switch to a Mac. I have to do more research about it to make sure it's worth it, new software and all. I think for now, if you want a good print, just submit the original to DPC print and charge , let's say 50cents for the print.
DPC will charge $2.35 basic fee for a 8x10 and they will take 25cents of your 50cents, so you get a decent 8x10 print for $2.60 , I think that's a fair deal.

The only thing I heard that is bad about a MAC is that when it crashes, it REALLY crashes.
01/05/2007 02:45:26 PM · #23
hi guys, I use a iMac G5 and love it, I will never use a PC unless i do online gaming. My Mac crashed out big time once but it was totally my fault. They lock up rarely and just need to be rebooted when it happens.

Good luck in WPL4 by the way, I see you are on the waiting list so you need to hope that 1 of the other teams fails to complete the team then you can get a space.

A full set of rules for WPL is listed on the website.

Hey fellow Team D80 bench warmers, how is everybody doing in any entered current challenges? I'm in the Fences challenge, my score is lower than the front gate to Lilliput. Let's talk shop, do you shoot in A S P or M mode, and why. Do you ever use the vari modes? RAW or JPEG? What PP program do you use? What lens do you use the most? Built-In or external flash, and how often do you use? What are your preferred Custom Settings? Boxers or briefs? What tripod do you use?
01/06/2007 05:32:35 PM · #25
I try to shoot at Aperture mode as much as I can b/c I have better control of the depth of field as well as +/- ev as needed. I usually set the white balance to cloudy(-2) - reccommended by some Nikon guru...lol. I shot with RAW + Jpeg Fine, so if I want to edit the RAW image within the D80, I have more options ( but it takes up a lot of the SD card's memory - I have 3 x 2 GB Sandisk Extreme III and 2 x Sandisk SDHC 4 GB cards. ) I do keep the grid up in the viewfinder to help my alignment. I use a 20+ year old Bogen tripod, had it since I was a teenager and still working great.

This image is the result of combining 2 RAW images inside the D80.
