Greetmir - he's referring to the fact he probably shoots in RAW format then converts to jpeg for the challenges. For a minimal challenge, you can't use RAW and convert - you have to shoot and use the jpeg.

' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', '/') + 1) . ' howzit - Joshua trees are cool! Haven't seen one in ages. They'll also take the paint off a Jeep if you happen to drive too close to them.

And didn't ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', '/') + 1) . ' Coley get another ribbon this week already? He's got the best durn tree to shoot....

Minimal editing rules does not allow for RAW images converted to jpeg. You have to shot in either RAW+Jpeg and submit the jpeg or shot in jpeg.

I was just thinking this morning while traveling to work and watching the beautiful sunrise and the trees at the horizon : a trees challenge would be nice! Yeah, but didn't have the camera with me this morning, so no pics from this colorful sunrise....maybe I'll get lucky again the next days!
Cool challenge anyway and I like the minimal editing rules!!!
Bring on the trees, oh yeah!

So will shooting just one tree be ok for a "Trees" challenge? I know the description makes it clear but people don't actually bother with that when voting it seems.

duplicate it in-camera or something, we dont care.
if there is only a single tree (singular, and not plural) then it is DNCM

yours sincerely,
the DNMC nazi group

j/k!!!

I disagree. It does say 1 or more trees, so I think one tree does meet the challenge. I won't vote lower because there is only one tree. I am looking for shape, texture and composition as well as lighting, whether it is one tree or 10.

uh.. will half a tree do.. I could only take the top.. it still looks like a tree.. I think..

uh.. and remind me never to take pics when it's the sunniest time of the day... missed the editing cause the colours are so dead looking.. :<

Absolutely. The topic is "Trees" - that's like buying a photographic coffee table book on Trees (there is a magnificent one out there by the way) - you open it and some pictures are of single trees, some are of clusters... the title of the book insinuates that the contents illustrates trees, and everything about trees in a variety of locations etc...

I would go as far as to say that one doesn't need a full length shot of a tree, but close ups, abstracts, cross sections, dead trees, saplings...all these fall within the challenge topic.

This is my favourite "Tree" image off this site so far: ' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/322/thumb/168169.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/322/thumb/168169.jpg', '/') + 1) . '
(David Robinson's)
Go hug a tree and listen to what it says to you :-)

May I say this:

Trees was not a great choice for Minimal Editing. Being that we are only allowed to use the automated "Sharpen" tool in post-processing, we effectively cannot sharpen. Most every tree shot, when resized to 640 pixels, and then sharpened as such will have horrible "jaggies" and artifacts on the areas of the image where there is a lot of branch covering.

Is it just me or is that frustrating?

LOL. True of what most people think when they think "trees" ... but we have palm trees galore! ;-)

But, you can use USM, so no jaggies??

Just another idea for "Trees" - there are many types: not every tree image is a grand, majestic old man of the forest:
