Personally, I'd like to see this go on regardless of the forecast (unless it's gonna be absurdly cold, or a volcano is scheduled to go off, or some such thing).

A mostly cloudy sky will be much better for photographing waterfalls anyway, so even if it's supposed to rain, it's reasonably rare that we get ALL day rains. If it rains, we just go down a few beers until it brightens up :)

I echo theSaj's comments about the various gathering places. I would have to think that none of us are that map-challenged that we can't find the park. My suggestion (no, I've never been there before, but I have done my homework!) would be the parking area right off Route 118, about 1.6 miles east of the intersection of Route 487. The GPS coordinates are:

N41 17.965 W76 16.490

That would be my suggestion, anyway... at that parking area, you're right near the Kitchen and Adams falls, which would seem like a great starting point.

Tony, got your PM. I don't think I'll be joining everyone. I guess my friends would rather go on a Saturday so I will wait for them.

I had emailed the park just a few days ago to see what the trail status is, though, and got the following reply,

"The park is open year round. The Falls Trail is currently closed due to ice and snow on the trail. You can hike it if you have ice crampons, an ice axe, rope, and a partner. It should be open some time in April. You can check our website advisory for the reopening. //www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/parks/rickettsglen.aspx"

I would imagine that the snow and ice are gone by now but there have been no updates on the site and the reply just came on 4/1. *shrug*

Re: the confusion about where to meet... That's why everyone has a cell phone. Share numbers before you go. :-)

It was suggested to me to meet at an easy to find location for travelers from out of the area. That's why I posted it.

I am fine with just meeting at the park at 10:00am. I will check the trail status with a coworker tomorrow who lives 1/2 mile from the park. He told me about 3 weeks ago people were walking the trails. There is a phone number on the website, I will also call that tomorrow. It would be hard to imagine that there is still ice everywhere.

I will PM everyone my cell phone number as we get closer.

ps. I never organized a GTG before, so don't blame me for confusion.

No worries mate, confusion is inherent in any GTG. We won't blame you :-)

As of today the falls trails are still closed.

It is true. The fall trails are still closed! I just spoke with a park offical and the falls trails are still closed. She she they are out chopping ice on the trails every day and are hopeful that the trails will be open by April 15th but can't say for sure.

We have some choices to make:
1. Cancel and reschedule for later in the year.
2. Find an alternate destination since many people have that day set aside for this, maybe there is something else we can do and do the Rickett's Glan Park on the next GTG.
3. Risk it. Hope the trails are open, and if they are not on that day have an alternate destination.

Does anyone have any suggestions, or ideas? The floor is open.

I'm all for going forward with it. The fun part of a GTG is meeting fellow DPC'ers. In other ones I've attended, there's part of me that didn't even care if I had the camera along. I'm sure we could make the most of it. That's my .02, anyway...

I'm all for still meeting up. Is there anywhere else around that's nice and scenic? Should we come up with plan B site to get together?

Welcome to the joys of organizing a GTG -- there's always something that will go wrong! So far you're doing great!

I vote for option #3. I guess I'm just an optimist, but I hold out hope that they can have the trails clear by then. If not, there must be something else worth shooting down there.

Edit to add that I think I have babysitting lined up, so at this point in time I am in (another reason I don't want to scrap it).

They did JUST post this on their web site, by the way. It's hard to believe with the warm weather we just had that there will still be that much ice around. Yeesh!

Update April 5, 2007-- The FALLS TRAIL remains CLOSED. There is still a lot of ice on the trail creating very hazardous hiking conditions. The trail will remain closed to all but experienced hikers with the proper gear (minimal equipment includes crampons, and rope- ice axes are recommended).

It does seem like there are quite a few other trails that are presumably open. Obviously, ideally we'd want the Falls Trail to be open, but there's not a whole lot we can do about that... but there's the Evergreen Trail, which is a short trail (near the parking area I previously mentioned) that leads to Adams Falls.

There's a list of all of the trails here.

Are we playing for cameras?

No, but my camera is terrified of it. ;)

---------------------------

My thoughts, if the trails are closed then it might make sense to re-schedule later in April. Though I think if we can make contact with an actual park ranger and see if it is reasonable to expect them to be open by April 15th. That said, it's a state park...so it should have a fair amount of beauty beyond just the waterfalls.

Besides... ice can be a beautiful subject too. Someone should bring a "Sprite" can and we can do pseudo advertisement shots. *lol*

And we can always just buy a lot of crampons off of ebay!

*LOL*

I'm not too sure that feminine hygiene products are going to do us a lot of good out there.

If the ice forecast doesn't improve, I'd rather wait another week. If the GTG is NOT postponed, I'd probably still come, but it would be nice to have the star photo attraction available and maybe some hint of leaves.

Yeah, either way. I'm flexible. I just wouldn't want to see it get pushed too far back, because weekends really start to fill up the further we go.

THIS JUST IN....SPECIAL REPORT FROM PENNSYLVANIA

Snow! Snow! Snow!

That's right, much to my wife's dismay it is snowing. This means that instead of the ice on the trails likely clearing up we're looking at it more likely being added too.

This leads me to think that postponing might not be such a bad idea. (Blast that global warming...it's just not doing it's job. Here it is April and we're still getting snow.) *LOL*

Besides, everyone knows April showers bring May flowers. So perhaps if we postponed it to May we'd have some nice flowers to shoot as well.

How does May 6th sound to everyone? (I know this is hard for the babysitting types).

May 6 I'm involved in an all day trip for the stupid required gym class I'm in, and there's no way I can get out of it.

I'd still come down on the 25th and give it a go. Thrtr are bound to be other things to shoot in the park, and in a weeks time it's possible that the snow may melt off. How much did you guys get, anyway?
