I would say too much. The sharpening created a lot of noise in the background horse and rider. The braided mane on the foreground horse looks kinda weird with the extra sharpening too. I also kinda like the sky more in the original.

*edit - spelling

yeah - i think you played around a bit too much with that white levels slider and the sharpen tool ;) Is seems a lot of things are just blown. And the noise is a bit of a problem. This was a simple levels and curves adjustment with some very minor masking on the levels and very subtle dodge and burn with selective sharpening on the tackle and the head outline - took about 2 minutes...

Here's the link for pic

I don't have PS handy at the moment, but I agree that you went too far. What should be a slight shine on the horse's hair has turned into a lumpy surface. Classic oversharpening.

I do like how you brightened everything, though, and increased the contrast.

Not to worry, lots of people don't realize it. :) The rule is there to help with our dial-up users around the world, who have to pay for their Internet by bandwidth usage.

It was a great edit!

I would try sepia for this shot. The appeal of the photo is the tones not the color or the sky, both of which would be subdued under sepia while the tones take center stage, IMO.
