assignment #2

I like textures and patterns. When I am looking with photography eyes I see patterns instead of things.

ok, this forum has been dead for a while, but we all love it so i'm going to bring it back now.

my scores have been getting so much lower lately :] my night shot is getting in the low 4s, which is a nice change from high 4s, high 3s and various 5s; it gives me some more variety ;] i don't think i'll enter a challenge this week, as i won't be able to do this amazing shot i had in mind for hair. it was out of the box and even carried a message :( oh well, i'll enter the next set of challenges and do something amazing there...

AU5 Assignment #2

I am reasonably decent at motorsport photography. Also, I am excellent at thinking, "Wow, that would make a great photo!" and not being able to pull it off because what I see I can't seem to get the photo to show clearly.

Ok... where to begin? It took me a LOT of time reading this thread entirely and it was so interesting!
I'll write my thoughts random, as it's late (very late, 2.40 am) and I have to go to bed ;)
I admire very much charliebaker

I keep my average under 5 by shooting for the Brown every couple of months.

for being able of feeling free from votes. I'm not as good, I crave for votes and I was extremely excited for all this week as my entry in the bicycles challenge was scoring in the range of 5.2-5.4 bringing my average to 5.0392 (exactly now). Said that, I'd like to join the AU5 club, as a member or a supporter it's the same (I will probably switch from a role to the other many times!), because I think it could be another precious way of improving my skills ;)

Then, to catch up the other members, here are my assignments:

1) What do you want to achieve in your photography?
I want to feel good at taking pictures, I want the camera to be simply an instrument in my hands with which I can play all the symphonies that come to my mind.

2) What reactions do you hope for in your viewers?

I want them to say "WOW!!!" when they look at a picture of mine, but I know that it's not something that one can achieve with every picture she/he takes... actually, of the hundreds/thousands picture that I took in my life, only one has a "wow" factor (with no exclamation marks). So I think that a reachable reaction in my viewers is to grab their attention and make them interested.

3) What challenges do you face in photography, and how do you overcome them?

The biggest challenge is to reach the manual settings into the menu of my small p&s camera. It takes a long time and I am not able to freeze a special moment unless I use the auto settings.
I was used to an analogical fully manual camera and turning the diaphragm with my left hand and the time with my right hand was very easy and quick... I'm not sure that DSRL are designed in the same way and quite curious about it.
There's no solution to it, but at least I can customize a program, so if I have to do many pictures with similar/same settings, I can do that and overcome the problem that if the camera shuts down for battery saving I don't lose all the settings.
Another challenge is to compose better my pictures, when I look at them on my monitor I find lots of flaws to almost every composition and I'm trying to watch carefully my subject before shooting so that I would get a better composition, but most of times it doesn't work. I guess it's a matter of practice. Started to think about composition only recently.

Name one thing relating to photography that you do well.

I'm very good at catching natural and spontaneous attitudes/behaviors in people. I usually have my camera on my face all the time when hanging around with friends (well, not all the time, but fairly a good time), so after some while they don't notice it anymore and become relaxed and then I start shooting :)
In these cases, I'm good at predicting a nice expression, so I shoot in advance and get the moment that I wanted to photograph (it wouldn't work if you thought of shooting after having seen a nice expression).

Well, I think I might be missing something, I wanted to say so many things when I read all your posts but I can't remember now... with my poor English it took me an hour to write this post!

And this makes me notice a painful correspondence between my incapability of using my camera and my English as I wished to express me properly ;)

1) What do you want to achieve in your photography?
I want to cease become a photographer who programs, instead of a programmer who takes a few pictures. I have the support of my spouse and family to run for this goal. I'm hoping to step into animal portraits first, and people, and macros oh I love macros.

2) What reactions do you hope for in your viewers?
Emotion. I want them to see what I love. When I take pictures of my daughter I want them to see the innocence, the beauty and simplicity of pure joy. When of the furred or finned members of my family or the zoo, I hope they see the amazing paint G_d has done for us. If it's a landscape or the sky or a flower, again I hope they see what's been made for us and what they might be missing in everyday busy busy life.

3) What challenges do you face in photography, and how do you overcome them?
Oh so many. One I have no training at all. Flying by the seat of my britches every shot. I am barely seeing the light and how it will affect my picture.... what the difference is in my eyes and my lens. I don't know the camera settings... Tied to auto until I do understand better. Post Processing. I'm getting better there, but still soooo much to learn. $$$ for equipment is always an issue, though I've put a lot into it in the last 6 months. And last but certainly not least, as I get older my vision is getting worse, and every year it's harder and harder to see through the lens.

As well I get soooooo frustrated with voters... and I take it all to heart that they hate what I did, and because of it there must be something wrong with me.

How to overcome. Well First commitment. I WILL SUCCEED. Second Practice practice practice. Third, by joining in. Like in starting Team Reject, with posting here. By talking to others and sharing my successes and failures not only will I better them but I'll better myself.

' gattamarta: welcome! don't worry about your English; it's more than fine, it's poetic. i don't think i've ever seen anyone express themselves so well with the English language. also, a wow without exclamation marks can be even more stunning than one with. it can be one that stirs up emotions too deep for words, so in my opinion, you should only compare a wow with the type of wow you wanted from somebody.

at ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_F.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_F.gif', '/') + 1) . ' chesire: you may already know this, but DPC has tutorials that can help you understand the different functions of your camera. once you understand more of how a camera works, you'll be one MAJOR step closer to understanding manual settings. also, i'm glad to hear that you are pursuing your dreams towards photography. even better, i'm glad to hear that your family is backing you up. the support of loved ones is sooo very important if you are going to take that step. btw, don't be afraid to say God in a forum here :] infact, God...God, God, God... Jesus Christ, Holy Spirit, Bible...God, God, God ;P ... we aren't here to argue beliefs, so we'll be open to anybody mentioning their beliefs. we will be open to others opinions and beliefs here :)

1) What do you want to achieve in your photography?
2) What reactions do you hope for in your viewers?
3) What challenges do you face in photography, and how do you overcome them?

1) Professionalism, the elimination of mistakes, the evoking of emotion in the viewer, capturing the beauty that I see in a scene and being able to convey it to the viewer.

2) As above, I want the viewer to see what I see in the photo.

3) Stripping away my pre-conceived perceptions of things and evaluating a scene in and of itself. For example, if I see a picture of Western Australian Wheatbelt country I immediately think of my Uncle's farm and the fun I have there. Therefore the picture means one hell of a lot more to me than to someone else who has not had my experiences. I don't really know how to overcome that.
04/17/2007 02:24:39 AM · #199
hehe. we all face your problem. i have a hard time looking at pictures of Haystack Rock, down in Cannon Beach, without thinking of all the times i had there. field trips in elementary school, school plays held in the Coaster Theater, family outings, etc. i doubt any of us can completely overcome this...
04/17/2007 04:22:41 AM · #200
Well, we'll see how well I have done, I went up to the farm last week and took some landscapes for my portfolio and came back to find the landscapes challenge. So, we'll see how I've done.
