I know there are DPC'ers from all over the world and various backgrounds. How bout a contest where the topic is "Ethnicity" so that the challenge involves the photographer's personal ethnicity/background based in what country their lineage is....

These are 2 of my young friends. One is Australian and one is from Zimbabwe, South Africa. Both live in Australia.

Sorry to be a party pooper here, just a note, Zimbabwe is a country all on its own, not part of South Africa. Southern Africa, yes. Sorry, just my ethnic partiotism that kicked in there. Hope you can forgive.

Great idea for a challenge though!

I would like to see one that explored Cultural Roots and Heritage ... as in traditional dress and dances and such ... I like this idea too but maybe we could call it something like Ethnic Diversity or Cultural Diversity. I would almost be afraid that using just Ethnicity would invite shots of violence between various fighting ethnic groups.

Yes I realise that, I did check to make sure that it wasn't central Africa but then forgot to change it to southern. Forgot that some people might mistake it for the country.

I am Dutch by birth but very Australian by nature so did not have anything like that and the photo above was about as close as I have.

I think it's funny how Americans travelling in Europe often reply to "where are you from" with "California" or another state instead of saying "America" or "the states"
just rambling

Suppose cause most people know where California is. But if I were to tell you I live in Gauteng, you may not have a clue...

Well, technically, every "state" in the United States is a nation unto itself. Just unified. Gradually more so...

But our states are not mere provinces. So one can rightly say such. And Texans are often known for doing so. *lol*

Perhaps the closest one gets to this concept in Europe is either the EU. (I imagine few EU members think of themselves as mere provinces, but give it 200 yrs. Will China think of EU members as mere provinces as the federation gets stronger?)

Another example that fits I think is with regards to the United Kingdom of Great Britain. You have England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales. Many people consider these their own nations and a great many their own ethnicities.

Ireland isn't part of the United Kingdom.

And we are all seperate countries, whereas Americans are all from the USA itself and are governed by federal law.

It may be that some places are so different than others. New York is totally different than Tennessee and that's different than California which is different than Utah. All those places are in the US, but are very different when it comes to accents, local food, dress, etc. Just my 2c.

I thought Northern Ireland was...or something to that effect.

As for all separate countries. Considering that it was just recently from what I understand that Scotland received a parliament. I am not quite sure I see it as such.

Many of the eastern states retain a bit more spirit of independence in the souls of their citizens. Perhaps this is because they were in fact separate colonies and states.

Each state has it's own government, legislature, etc.

Though ethnicity sounds interesting... I have a feeling people will toil and tumble over differentiating between objects of national identity and ethinicity.. probably best of we stick to culture..

Saj

You are quite correct Northern Ireland is part of the UK. The official name is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, but they are absolutely all separate countries, even with their own languages.

Rankles - check the front of your passport!

I HATE it when people ask me where I am "FROM" ... I always have to give them a HUGE story ... Why can't they (you) ask me where I "LIVE"?

If you ask me where I am from I have to type this HUGE story about being brought up in Central Canada ... living most of my life in Western Canada in Calgary ... and now living in Belgium after marrying my wife of 7 plus years (and intend to stay here forever) after meeting her on the internet about 9 years ago.

I NEVER ask people where are you from ... I ALWAYS ask ... where do you live? ... if they wanna add details ... that is fine but they can just answer with the area they live in at the moment and that is fine.

Sorry ... pet peeve of mine. How the hell does someone answer that question when they have lived all over the world? ... Where you from? ... sheesh ...

This could be interesting... I'm a mix of English, Irish, Scottish, Dutch and Welsh heritage and, tracing it back farther, the Irish fled religious persecution in Germany... who knows where the others originally started out. Kilts and clogs, anyone?

But I do like the basic idea, as I mentioned when it was suggested a while ago :)

Great topic! I think the word "lineage" sums it up nicely. Doesn't matter where you are from. I think the intent of the thread may be what bloodline do you have...German, Russian, Chinese, etc..then can go back to specifically where, what province/state. Good choice. Hope they do something similar at DPC.

... at any rate ... I think this thread cannot be complete without posting one of my most favourite images on DPC ...

... enjoy ...
