Well for those of you who asked where the saxophone was in my Free Study entry, the term "Mississippi Saxophone" is a nickname for a harmonica. I can't help but think that over the course of all the voting, I could have picked up that extra little score bump to hit the 6 mark had I picked a different title. I always seem to have a hard time picking a good title and in this case, I think I got too obscure. Lots of great images in this past Free Study, so I'm happy with the overall finish.

Anyone else have a hard time with titles???

Cheers,

- D

Regularly. Sometimes it seems obvious to you, but not to others. Such is life. :)

I had a real hard time coming up with a title for this one. I didn't want to insult people who knew who Pavlov was, but I didn't know how many people would remember who he was. After fighting myself for awhile I came up with The fork says, "mmmmm... cake" just minutes before the challenge started. It unintentionally insulted the people who knew who he was and still dumbfounded the people who didn't know. That's my title failure story, heh.

It would be really strange if people voted you lower because of the title so I doubt it had much to do with anything. Had it been entered in a smaller challenge it probably scores over 6 very easily.

I think titles are important and I agree with what I think rasdub is saying - not that anyone voted him lower for it, but that he might have been voted higher with a better one. I think some people do vote up for good titles, few if any vote down for bad ones, but if I am teetering between giving someone a 6 or a 7, a good title can easily push my vote up - a really good title can actually make some people overlook flaws they may otherwise ding you for.

I agree too, for me a title can give me a certain feeling about a picture (which IS reflected in the vote, but not more than a single point I guess). In the fork and cake case for example, I would tend to be bored if the title was "Fork and Cake", but I'd be rather amused if it were "Let them eat cake" or "Use the Forks, Luke!" ;).
It might make me give a higher score to technically sound but compositionally common shots..

Sorry if I seemed a bit short with my comment - I gave you a six anyway... (if it helps). Thanks for teaching me something new.

No worries Matthew....I wasn't upset with anyone for saying "that's not a sax" or "where's the sax", just wanted to bring it up as a topic for discussion about how titles can affect or not affect your score. Take it easy :)

Also, thanks for all the posts so far and words of wisdom.
