I have this tutorial on using clipping mask tool
//photoshopcontest.com/tutorials/23/clipping-mask-101.html
however I feel like it is missing something it talks about having a 'cut out layer' it does not tell you how to do that. I am also on a mac if that matters.

Any help or better instructions would be greatly appreciated.

To me, a cut out layer is actually an Alpha Channel.

An alpha channel selection is actually thought of as a 'stencil', because of how it is used.

Look at the DPC tuts for more on alpha channel selections.

I can highlight the backround with the magic wand but it does not cut or delete to give me the checkered background

look at your Layers palette, is the layer called "background"? or layer 0? layer 1? etc?

if it says Background you can't make it transparent. if you double click on the layer where is says that, you can convert it to a layer with transparency.

it says layer 0
and now I do have checkered bgrd.

is that the end of it? i.e. I did some product shots that the people are trying to pull the product off the background for a brochure if I save at this point would they be happy?
