Got home from Christmas vacation to find that the kids have installed some crap on the family pc that's allowing all sorts of pop up ads. Can someone link me to a scanner site that'll get rid of whatever is causing the trouble? Something also put porn folders in my favorites list. The kids won't admit to downloading anything though so how do I find the culprit?

Take a peek at this thread...

The porn links in your favorites were prolly installed by whatever malicious program(s) are responsible for the pop-ups.
It's not necessary for the kids to have intentionally installed something; they probably just visited the wrong site.

You can use your History folder in IE to see what sites were accessed while you were gone. There's a chance they might have deleted the history but if they haven't you've got them red-handed.

You can also use the Task Manager to see what programs are running in the background. If you see something mysterious try Googling for it and you will be able to identify whether or not it's a valid program.

I use Spy Killer to rid my computer of unwanted Adware and malicious files that can take information from my computer without my knowledge. I also use the Google tool bar to block popups. I installed it 8 days ago and it has already blocked 187. My computer has been running much faster for it.

Also another note. If you are having a problem with grey pop ups titled "messenger servie" pop ups, you can do this to get rid of them...

o Disable the Messenger Service Manually:
-- Click on the Start button in the taskbar
-- Open Control Panels
-- Go to "Administrative Tools" (XP users may need to go to "Performance and Maintenance" first, then "Administrative Tools")
-- Double-click on "Services"
-- Scroll down to "Messenger"
-- Double-click on "Messenger"
-- Change the Startup type to "Disabled"
-- Click "Stop" to stop the service

It seemed like a miracle when those things quit coming up.
