I'm so sorry to hear that. At least you were able to make difference in so many lives, and as the surviving members of the families involved look at the images in decades to come, your kind deeds will brings smiles and tears to their faces, a payment far beyond anything you could ever put in your pocket.

You already did, see above.

Billy, that's so sad. You must have become quite close to the family in this short time.
Terribly stressful for you, both emotionally and physically. But you can only do what you can do, and I KNOW the family will be forever grateful for everything.
Hang in there :)

eta; just finished looking at the album... Billy, they're stunning and I have tears, knowing the story behind them.

Well, I got the call a little while ago... Miss Vicky passed away last night, only a couple hours after I finished uploading the images of her son's wedding. (Vicky is the sweet woman in the yellow dress, sitting on the porch.)

I don't know what to feel, or what to do (yet I'm stuck in a training class via computer @ work, and cannot leave). The family just asked me to provide photos from Vicky & James' wedding, for her memorial service, and that they need them by close of business today... but I don't have the files with me (how could I be so ignorant!). I've asked them to contact the person @ the funeral home that does the slideshow / DVD, and have that person call me for arrangements - guess all I can do is rush home, grab the digital files off the laptop, print the 8x10 photos, and rush to the funeral home tonight.

Anyway, sorry to ramble - I'm totally drained, yet grateful that this family has allowed me such a personal glimpse into their lives. I'm thankful that they appreciate the work I've done (and I could care less about any money for this job). I have a newfound appreciation for what it means to be a 'professional photographer' - the faith that a family places in us, and the joy that we can bring them with only a touch of humanity, and the click of our shutter...

I'm grateful to all my friends here @ DPC, who were jumped right in to help - thank you everyone. Just let me know if there is anything I can do to repay YOUR kindness.

Thanks for the update.
If you're half the human being I know you to be, you have a glow inside you right now that is filling your life with the kind of warmth that no money could ever buy. It's a great feeling when we can make a monumental difference in other people's lives, especially those that need it the most.

Drop me a line when you need help.

Was there ANY doubt she'd love it? :) I'm so proud of everyone who had a hand in this; Glenda, Billy, and all the DPC'ers who helped out.

perfect timing sheila!

i JUST got off the phone with our 'contact' - the last few days were exhausting for the groom's mother (the cancer patient), so Glenda & I were not able to see her reaction.

today, their entire family sat down and viewed the slideshow together and they LOVED it!!! (apparently, the son's first question was 'how much does billy want to make one for us?')

Yes, we want to know that it's all ok! We need to know now. Big HUG to you for doing this and to everyone that helped. It shows what a great bunch of human being we have in our little DPC family. Now I need to go cry...

All turned out well, I hope? :)

i'm leaving straight from work & rushing back to the other town. thanks to brad and leroy, the slideshow of the mother's wedding will be played during the reception of her youngest son's reception. Mom will get to watch her 'baby' getting married before she passes...

you are so right sheila, and that is why i told them to 'stop asking how much you should pay me'...

i told them that they were free to pay as little, or as much, as they like - there are times when i can NOT find it in my heart to tell people that i have to have money in order to do something for them, and this has been one of those times.

besides, i keep thinking 'how would i have felt when my mom dealt with cancer a couple years ago'. yes, very much my honor to attend their wedding....
08/01/2007 06:28:05 PM · #11
But Billy, what an honour for you to be a vital part of all this :)

Brad - you are right... THAT was dessert! (FYI - I been 'skooled' by a master LOL) very nicely done; glenda & i really enjoyed how much more powerful the presentation became!

Damn - now I owe ya, like, TWO whole beers er something! (wait; tell me you don't drink that watery yellow stuff with a lime stuck in it! LOL)

For everyone else: We host with SmugMug (shameless promotion & new-user coupon in my signature ;) - and they allow for video storage now too.

I'll try to learn how to do that next, and will hopefully post something in the next few days (we have 7 customers waiting, then this came up, and now we think this family might ask us to shoot the youngest son's wedding tomorrow night!)

Gray hair? hell no, its going straight to white! (my bday is this weekend too... no rest for the wicked!)

You are the man Billy! I just read the story and looked at the pics. Most touching and very happy and sad at the same time.

Powerful stuff.

Shelly - thanks so much for the offer! eta - WOW! your very first post on DPC, and you are already offering to help someone: BRAVO & an extra hug!

Brad kept me on-track, and we got it working... hope to hear from the family tonight / tomorrow, and I'm sure they will be pleased.

I knew I could count on this amazing group of people to help - thank you all <<big collective ginormous huggage to all>>

I have proshow gold and downloaded your file and I was going to convert it for you, but it isn't in .psh format for ProShow Gold... it is in a file that I don't recognize. It is in .pxc file format. Did you save it in .psh format? If you did, upload it and I will convert it to a file that you can use

Just got a message from Brad. They've got a working copy, so I'll stop my very slow download.

Glad to hear that it's put together. Now, Billy, get some sleep.

Just an update:
Billy is off to do something right now, followed by
getting some sleep. His slide show is great! Later on,
I'll be doing a web cam live tutorial with him to cut
down on the learning curve and show him about adding
panning, rotation, zoom effects in the slide show.

I certainly understand the flexible hour thing, but how does having flexible customers help in this situation? :D

Easy - in times like this, I ask if they need to pick up theirs cars at the end of the day, or would it be easier first thing in the morning. End of the day means traffic congestions too, working in my favor, as many don't like fighting the crowd. I also asked one customer that wanted to bring in a car for a coolant leak today, that though I couldn't guarantee to find or fix it today, could she leave it in case I didn't, and if not, could it stay overnight in case I needed to do it tomorrow. This way, I free up time and can do them at my leisure, after hours, staying late or overnight if needed, in order to get more important things done like this slide show.
;)

Billy, sent a PM.

The file is downloading slowly. My PM will help get it done quicker.

Sometimes it's great being self-employed with flexible hours and customers.

It's a business phone with unlimited data.

It will be slow, but may work. I even have a storage card.

I'll have to throw in a classic (well classic as of the '90s) wedding song; Marc Cohn's "True Companion".

what I desperately need is for someone to (please?) download this file, use YOUR copy of Photoshow to save it in a way that doesn't show the little gold banner across the bottom, then send it back to me. oh - the file is nearly 30 MB!

I know this is asking alot, but it really is for a needy family.

thanks!

almost forgot the link! 'YouSendIt' storage thingy

I'm going to give it a try. I have my software here.

Edit - I'm blocked at work. I'm going to try it on my phone. Wish me luck.
