So I'm just curious ... has anyone ever heard of having the reception BEFORE the wedding?

This Thursday I'll be shooting a reception for a couple who are getting married on Friday. They explained to me that they didn't want the hassle of dealing with a reception on their wedding day, so they opted to have the reception first.

Now... I've heard of having a wedding breakfast (or luncheon) before the wedding, giving family members time to get to know each other before the nuptials. But I'd never heard of having the entire reception ahead of the wedding.

So anyway... I like to show a slide show at the reception which includes the bride and groom. Usually I shoot the wedding earlier in the day and show the slide show that evening. This reception-before-the-wedding idea turns that plan upside down.

So I suggested that we do a "formals session" (i.e. bride and groom together in their wedding attire) a few weeks ahead of the wedding so that we could print some pictures to put on display at the reception and so that I'd have content for my slide show.

These are some of the images we took a few weeks ago.

The interesting thing will be to see people's reactions to the prints being on display knowing full well that the actual wedding is the day after.

Anyway, so I was just wondering if anyone else has done this? Or heard of it, even?

Whoa. That's different. I've never heard of that. I love your shots from their session though!!! So beautifully processed. I still need to find an image that I need your help with! I haven't forgotten about your wonderful offer. :)

I was just thinking about you the other day ... wondering if you had already found other help. The offer still stands (though I'm a tad busy this week).

Never heard of that before, either. Very interesting. Love your shots! Wish I were half that good!

Wow. Now that's a first. Congrats on having one of the most unorthodox scheduled weddings I suppose. :)

Great shots, too.

LOL, I thought you meant the reception was going to immediately precede the ceremony ... I had these visions of drunken bridesmaids and groomsmen trying to carry out their duties at the altar. :-}

But no, I've never heard of that, and it sounds kind of messed up to me, but whatever works for them, I guess. She said she didn't want the hassle of dealing with a reception following the wedding, but it seems that it would be a lot more hassle trying to put on a reception the day before the big day! And would it even be called a reception??

Are they an LDS couple? I hear about that about 1/4 the time with LDS weddings because 1. they want to focus on the temple instead of the flowers and cake on their wedding day and 2. they want to get the frig out a there ASAP for their wedding NIGHT.

I think it's weird personally. Going through the line..."Congrats...er..I mean...good luck tomorrow, I guess"

But I think lines and flowers and cakes are all sorta silly fluff anyway.

That's different. The reception always gives me something to look forward to after going through a wedding.

Never heard of it but sounds like a great idea really (but then I would never do one of those again and run away instead, so what do I know)... Gives you lotsa time for the formals after the wedding anyway :-)

Sounds a little similar to our rehearsal dinner...my folks threw a big party with a clam bake, music, dancing for almost everyone that came to the wedding the night before. we all had more fun there than at the reception that was too formal

There are a lot of communities in India who have their wedding reception even before their wedding

How come everyone else can see the pictures and I can't?

As a guest, I'm not sure I'd want the hassle of getting dressed and to the venue twice in a day. Yes, close family members often have a party the night before the wedding, but when I attend a wedding as an ordinary guest, I kind of expect to be able to set one day and outfit aside to celebrate the wedding and that's all. No reason I'd have to go to both, of course.

Can you imagine having to pose formals with a bunch of drunks?
