Not a contest, but a way to get exposure for your art.

Bad Idea Magazine, a new UK magazine specializing in non-fiction storytelling, is looking for a photo essay about “death”. Unfortunately there is no money available, but the exposure is fantastic.

These guys are the business. The past two issues have featured photo essays from Magnum photographers as well as pieces from well established Pulitzer Prize winning journals.

If you are interested please email me at photo@sebmeyer.com. The more creative your take on the subject of “death” is, the better!

BOSTON, MASS.

To all; Novembers exhibition at The Distillery Gallery
will be curated by both Femke Lutgurink and myself
(Robert daVies). The gallery has received a great
response by both the public and press and offers a
spectacular viewing space unlike most.

ART SPOTTING will be the next exhibition at the end of
November and yes, I would like all to participate if
possible. The restrictions for the work are few - the
pieces only have to be 2D and be no bigger than 5
inches by 5 inches. Each artist is encouraged to
submit between 3-5 pieces of work -
photo/print/painting/drawing etc etc. Once up, the
viewer will be giving a tracking book and a pair of
binoculars and set free to wander arrange the space in
search of the work displayed. They will be asked to
not only find the work but to record a coded
inscription for every piece found.

Please, those who would like to participate, I need
confirmation by early October, and would need to have
the work by mid-November. It would be great to have
you all in - and to really put the viewer to a visual
test. I would also like a brief bio that could include
your usual migration habits and yes, your wing span.

Guernica Magazine, see more info below, is looking for documentary photography features on the themes:

Home

If you are potentially interested in showing your work in Guernica, please send a general description of the feature with a link to a few of the images.

More information about Guernica:

Guernica Magazine

* Now read in over 100 countries, Guernica will turn three years old this fall. The magazine, likened once to the illegitimate offspring of Foreign Affairs and the Paris Review, has marked many milestones in that time. The magazine has published never-before-seen translations of the poetry of Marcel Proust, by Richard Howard, launched a highly successful guest fiction-editor series (George Saunders, Sam Lipsyte among them) and discovered talented new writers such as poet Sandy Tseng, who went on, months later, to win the prestigious “Discovery” Prize given by the 92nd Street Y and The Nation. Before Guernica she had never published a poem.
* In less than three years, the magazine has published a lot in translation, from Farsi, German, Russian, Chinese, Romanian, Swedish, Spanish, Italian, Hebrew, Persian via India, Polish, Vietnamese… and in English but from Canada, Ireland, England and Australia.
* The interviews section has featured discussions with heads of state and government (President and Nobel Laureate Oscar Arias of Costa Rica and Congressman John Conyers of Detroit) as well as award winning writers and artists: Ha Jin, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Russell Banks, Joan Didion, Don DeLillo, Samantha Power, Billy Collins, Stephen Dunn—to name just a few.
* Guernica essays have covered consumer affairs and foreign affairs, like the in-depth series on the U.S. pharmaceutical industry or a series under way now on the absurdities of life under the government of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran; Guernica writers have shed light on the plights and customs of the last Jews of Cairo and the Kayan people of Burma, from a member of those groups (like Salar Abdoh of Iran) or a welcome observer.
* Guernica has covered musicians and entertainers like folk singer Thea Gilmore, salsa king Oscar Hernandez, and Oscar-nominated director Sally Potter, and the current issue features an interview with Mia Farrow on the plight of Darfur .
* As mentioned above, we’re now read in over 100 countries, growing in regions like the Middle East, Asia and Latin America, and have a tight, rapidly growing and influential following in North America and Europe. Best-selling author Howard Zinn says, “There is nothing quite like Guernica, where you can find an extraordinary bouquet of stories, poems, social commentary, and art. It is always a pleasure to read.”
