I've never seen such a good photo do so poorly. I've entered 130+ challenges and have a pretty good feel for the voting.

In this type of challenge technically good won't necessarily get you a good score, Uniqueness will have a large factor IMO.

I am looking and looking and I can't see anything technically wrong with my shot. I think I've got some impact but even if I don't, I really can't see this submission scoring below 5.

I always hate when I enter a shot I like and it gets slammed. Its even worse when there are no comments. :(

So my shot was a stretch. A big one. But damn, that hurts.

Sorry Valkner. I credit you with trying something different- without actually knowing what you did of course. Voters don't always like different. The "human animal" pics are probably not going to do very well. I saw one flower which probably got entered into the wrong challenge by mistake.

I have been up one challenge, down the next. So far, pretty good on this one. I took it just hours before the challenge closed. It was higher last night, but can't complain.

I believe the votes pretty much confirm my feeling that many viewers are passing by without doing that double-take. I almost passed by this 'little gem' by, but akin to Charlie Brown, I saw something special in this 'little gem':-)

Eh (shrugs shoulders), voting is STILL in the early stages so there is still time for voters to prove me wrong.

but I think I have pretty much pegged a majority of the voters will keep me at what score I predicted:-)

I started the morning better than anything else yet, at 5.66, but it's dropped.

I've often wondered just how deeply "early voters" can actually look at a photo when we're seeing number of votes rising after midnight. Really, how quickly must these voters be going through the shots and how deeply are they really able to look at a photo and give it any real thought??? It usually takes me a full week to get through all of the photos in any challenge to both look, think and comment. Even 20% takes time to truly "look".

I'm wondering if perhaps, it's an "oooo...ahhhhh" type of basis whereby, if it has that instant attraction, it gets a higher score....if it requires some thought to "get it", it's given a lower score???? Just wondering. Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

I think that's absolutely it. I think most voters vote within a second of the photo popping up on the screen and its more often than not a love, like or hate at first sight and that's it. Ahhhhhhh to only be able to figure out how to create that love-at-first-sight-impact with every photo, huh?

Im currently doing a test on this. I had some very good animal shots that are not WOW POP colorful, but the pose, the background and the emotion is there if you sit on it for a few. You will start to wonder whats the story behind it. But this time I submitted a mediocre shot of an animal but, with alot of color and see how it comes out. Currently its at 5.84

I am doing this test because I posted a really good shot of my dog on the half challenge and it got a 5.4

This shot I submitted is not as good, but its very colorful and it attracts the eye. So I am thinking along the same lines of PhotoInterest on the voters here.

Hmmm this is going to be a long week.

I'm still over six (6.0577), but had a 9 followed by a 1, then a 3, so I am anticipating this dropping considerably over the coming days.

If this stays here, then I will have my first 6+ and a PB. Yippee!

It's going to be one of those weeks I think....

Started with a 6, dropped to 5 and after 13 votes is back up to 6. I would like to think it stays at 6.00 now for the rest of the week!

It looks like my first 7+ score (if it holds) will beat out my usual dragonfly top-scorers, this being in Flora. ;-Þ

My score was at 6.7 this AM...it has been dropping like a rock all day.

Eek! It's been falling all day (from 5.8 to 5.4), and only one comment, and it's not even about the shot - it's about the border!

Maybe the people overnight will like it more...

Salmiakki: go get that new personal best! :) Then maybe you'll be distracted at trivia. *grin*

I'm drifting down a bit, but not too bad:

Okay....I'll be the first to recognize that there are some outstanding shots in the Fauna challenge, I'm getting more and more discouraged with entering. My last 3 challenges have been sub-par, to say the least, and my ability to capture the hearts of DPC voters is failing miserably.

While I also realize that I shoot for ME and what encourages my growth and pleasure, I'd be kidding myself if I said I didn't care what votes/comments I get.

That all being said, and the fact that I just renewed my membership/misery (jk) for another year, perhaps I should take some time off, away from entering challenges for awhile. I might go ahead and enter the Macro (only 'cause I so dig macros!) and maybe the Free Study....but beyond that, I think I need to re-focus. 'Nuff Said.
