I've been having a discussion with someone who claims that beginners have no chance of competing in advanced editing challenges because there is no way they can compete with people who are photoshop masters and can use layers and selection tools better than them. I'm on a quest to prove to that person that plenty of photos have ribboned or placed in the top 10 in advanced challenges that had nothing done to them that couldn't be done in basic editing (i.e. no selective editing).

I could use some help coming up with examples as not everyone lists their post processing steps in their details. I'd like to invite everyone to post their favorite photos that placed in the top 10 in an advanced editing challenge that used only basic editing rules. If this has been done before, please refer me to the thread. Thanks.

This one finished 4th in an advanced editing challenge. It is very nearly basic-legal, and probably would have scored the same if it WERE basic-legal; I did a tiny amount of cloning lower left, and a tiny amount of burning upper right, but neither was absolutely necessary. The rest of it is basic-legal.

this one was 17th, scored almost a 6.4. Pretty Basic.

This was a minimal editing challenge, but I think it proves that editing isn't everything.

My highest scoring photo was edited using basic rules, while entered into an Advanced rules contest. I didn't know much about layer masks and such at the time!

Thanks for the fantastic examples so far. Keep them coming if you have more. I'd like to overwhelm him with examples. :)

my best photo taken for the site

But this image scored well in a BASIC challenge; the OP is looking for basic-edited images that scored in top 10 of an advanced challenge.

Robert - I need to read this more carefully!

My highest scoring image (This fit under the old Basic rules set where tonemapping using Photomatix pro was allowed).
Oh, and this was entered in an "Expert Editing" rules challenge

And you can still accomplish the same thing in basic with shadow/highlight (currently still legal), most likely :-)

My 2 best images with absolutely Basic editing in Advanced Editing challenges
' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/0-999/440/120/283382.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/0-999/440/120/283382.jpg', '/') + 1) . '
19th with 6.60
' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/0-999/699/120/541033.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/0-999/699/120/541033.jpg', '/') + 1) . '
24th with 6.29

Have some that scored better while not being strictly basic (why leave dirt or unwanted reflections in if you can take them out?)

I usually only do basic editing for all of my challenge entries. I don't know how to use layers and masks and that stuff. Not a clue. Here are some that scored high in advanced editing challenges.

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/0-999/502/120/340204.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/0-999/502/120/340204.jpg', '/') + 1) . ' 3 out of 232, score of 6.9877

Here's a couple.

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/0-999/290/120/129297.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/0-999/290/120/129297.jpg', '/') + 1) . ', 4 of 137 - 6.3975 (glitter probably could've been removed with salt & pepper noise reduction - was my 5th challenge and had a lot to learn)

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/0-999/714/120/557431.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/0-999/714/120/557431.jpg', '/') + 1) . ', 8 of 157 - 6.8456

... and taken with a point-and-shoot cheapo camera too.

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/0-999/649/120/482837.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/0-999/649/120/482837.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

This is basic legal.

I used black electrical tape on a white piece of paper. Then adjusted curves to get rid of the 'seams' where the tape met.

This one did okay.

8.38, 361 favourites, 39300+ views

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/0-999/180/120/55938.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/0-999/180/120/55938.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

Editing was very simple, maybe a total of 30 seconds work.

Another one that is essentially as shot, with very simple editing

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/0-999/724/120/569123.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/0-999/724/120/569123.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

As is this one, again essentially basic editing rules, with a bit of spotting

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/0-999/632/120/465839.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/0-999/632/120/465839.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

Blue Ribbon, Landscape III, Expert Editing (Trial)
' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/0-999/668/120/498122.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/0-999/668/120/498122.jpg', '/') + 1) . '
Score 7.7599

No selective editing, would have passed basic editing rules

Basic editing in an advanced editing challenge.
' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/0-999/742/120/587753.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/0-999/742/120/587753.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

This could be done in basic editing (assuming you use clean, scratch-free glasses).
' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/0-999/710/120/550397.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/0-999/710/120/550397.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

This image could be done in basic editing (I cloned out one small, barely noticeable mark on the flower), the challenge was expert editing.
' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/0-999/664/120/505219.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/0-999/664/120/505219.jpg', '/') + 1) . '
