The new AF-S version of the 60mm macro looks tempting.

Ohhhhh, man. 16-85 with VR? As much as I love my Tamron 17-50, if this new lens turns out to be good, I think I'm gonna have to trade it in.

Ah the great addiction rears it's ugly head. ;)

My name is Jeffrey, and it's been 5 months since my last hit lens purchase. I came pretty close to swapping my 17-50 to jdannels for his 28-75, but I didn't want to give up the wide end. Now I don't have to (I hope).

As much as I love my 28-300 Tamron for my walkaround lens, I like the sound of this 16-85VR. I really want to get my hands on a fast lens though just to see what it's all about.....like the 50mm 1.8. I'm scared if I do that though, I'll be ruined for "regular" lenses. LOL!!!

Oh you will... ;) Mine has me dreaming of the 85mm f1.4 now! Has been said here before that it's a gateway lens and its true lol.

Nikkor 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR ?

Looks expensive for a lens that's f5.6 on the 85mm side. That's nasty slow.

levyj413- your Tamron 17-50 2.8 is probably a better lens in the long run.

Thank god Nikon finally realized the need for a lens with 84-degree coverage (16mm for DX). However I wish that they given up longer reach for speed. Say a 16-60mm f2.8-4 DX. It would be the digital equivalent to the Zoom-Nikkor 24-85mm f/2.8-4D. Or even better, a 16mm prime.

That being said, if it is at all decent Iíd trade off my Tokina 12-24 and Nikkor 18-70 for it.

The 24mm T/S had me really excited until I read it was incompatable with older manual focus cameras. I would want to use it more on my F3 than any other camera if I were to buy it.

Yeah, It is definately a stepping stone into the world of want. Since I purchased the 50mm 1.8 I have bought 5 or 6 lenses all 2.8 or faster. I find it hard to even look at glass slower than 2.8 But I did pick up the 18-200 VR because I wanted a a decent walk around with some range. Alot of times I end up regretting not having one of my other lenses along though when speed is an issue.

Yep, didn't notice the aperture. I definitely LOVE my constant 2.8.

The D60 specs are now up on the Nikon site: //tinyurl.com/2uoe7u

Can't say I'm overly impressed by the D60 specs...unless they undercut the new XSi by an extreme ammount (ie. similar price to current D40)...even then was it worth giving it a whole new name...why not D40x+ the upgrade seems less significant than the D40 to D40x. Seems like a D40x with a 'self cleaning sensor' and some new software features. (3 AF points still...really?? I've had 9 pt AF on my P&S for years now) :-/ Guess I should wait to see what the hands-on reviews say before I pass judgement.

Looks like the D90 was just rumor...for now.

shorty :P

A 'breif hands-on' of the D60: //www.dpreview.com/news/0801/08012911nikond601st.asp

Simply put: "A lot of the other differences appear to be on the marketing side of the development process."

yeah what the crap are they doing putting only 3 af points, that seems weak, not that I use them a whole lot, but it is nice to have more control. I'm fine with my D50, until I see that d90.

I hear that although when I upgrade I might make the jump higher up.

I'm fine with my D50 and I have the D200. :)
Did this camera put in a motor for prime lenses? I couldn't tell.

lol, yeah its a great camera, i just need a little better noise handling at the higher iso's. I think they did put a motor in, but I'm really not sure, its retarded if they didn't

If you mean the D60...nope, no in-body focus motor. Says so right in the specs for on the Nikon site:
"AF-S and AF-I NIKKOR: All functions supported
Type G or D AF NIKKOR not equipped with an autofocus motor: All functions supported except autofocus.
Non-Type G or D AF NIKKOR not equipped with an autofocus motor: All functions supported except 3D color matrix metering II and autofocus.
"

I guess that means "it's retarded." ;-)

I agree. I wonder what the build is like. I wouldn't change my 17-55 2.8 for it. Even though it cost half. I have the 55-200VR 4-5.6 and its too slow to use anywhere but outdoors. (It does rock outside!)

FYI

I received my 16-85mm from B&H yesterday (and I did sell my Tokina 12-24). Initial impressions are good, although I haven't critically looked at any images. One small nitpick is that the Zoom is stiffer than I would like. I guess Nikon was sick of all the complaints with the similarly constructed 18-200 with zoom creep.

Also related to the original post, Iím into my third week with the Nikon D60, and so far Iím very impressed with it. It is so small & light that I it became my take everywhere pocket camera, replacing my Canon G9. Just to push the limits of the dust reduction system, I put the D60 on a bellows, and so far so good. Also Iíve been trying out a lot of my older non-Ai glass that wonít fit on my D200 since the D60/40/40x will mount just about every Nikkor ever made.

The D60 infrared sensitivity is even less than the D200 (which is a LOT less than say a D70) requiring exposures of 12 seconds @ f8 / ISO 400 in cloudless noontime sun.

One grip I have, not with Nikon, but with Adobe is that Iím not able to open RAW files with CS3 or ACR with current versions. I never install camera manufacturer software, so Iím forced to shoot RAW+basic jpgs until Adobe updates.

You sold a 12-24 for a 16-85 o.O; Wow. Maybe that's just me loving my ultra wide angle. I'd never do that, the trade seems WAY unfair.
