March 30 - sounds like fun!

I'll keep you posted on whether I'd be able to make it. If I make it to Vegas and I can fly in a day early, I'll drive over.

ETA: for those who don't know, Arielle is probably the one of the very first DPC GTG organizers anywhere, and the LA group, under her leadership, was without a doubt the most active group anywhere, with a GTG of some kind almost every month!

Antelope Valley is awesome. Great place to shoot, if you like that sort of thing.

Awe, Fritz! Thanks for the recognition! I miss hosting DPC GTG each month! I want to try to get back into it. Tom Yi hosts over at LA Shooters, and I want to try to link up with them too when possible. We're all photogs and can learn so much from one another! It's great fun too!

Hope to see you in late March for the LA GTG at the Poppy Preserve!!

I should know by the end of the week whether I'll be able to make it. Fingers crossed!

I saw some pix from this weekend of the Preserve. The poppies are budding. I hope they are in full bloom by the end of the month. Does anyone here know how long poppies take to grow?

Dunno, but... our 2005 trip out there was on March 12. I hope the end of the month isn't too late!
03/03/2008 11:39:45 PM · #13
I don't think it will be too late. There was a freeze in January and some late rain this year, so it's expected to be a late season. I am hopeful for that weekend!!!

I definitely plan on being there (unless my kids have games scheduled)!

Let us know the game schedule as soon as you know it and maybe we can go the opposite day. Right now, I think we're open to both Saturday or Sunday as not too many have chimed in.

OK, looks like I'm there! I just have to confirm that I can get travel arrangements that work, and at reasonable cost. Arie, is it possible for you to do a little research on when peak is expected? Are we going to be too late for peak?

03/04/2008 01:57:29 PM · #17
I called, but the only updates are on their site. They don't open until 3/15. I did about 3 hours of research yesterday and all I could find (even on message boards) is that there's NO way to tell yet. The season relies on a heavy oct/nov rain, and we didn't get that. We got a January rain. So, it could be a late season. There are buds though, so they do expect growth... but the website doesn't predict a peak and nobody is there to give me any updates. I'll keep searching, but I have a feeling we won't know for sure til March 15th (when they open). :(

Regardless, we'll still go up there to see the desert wildflowers! They are starting to bloom already I've heard!
03/04/2008 02:44:33 PM · #19
Heck, we'll find *something* to shoot, even if it *is* rattlesnakes ;-)
03/04/2008 02:53:02 PM · #20
Exactly! I just did more searches and I can't even find how long it takes for a poppy to go from a bit of green poking out of the ground to a full bloom. I tried gardening sites and everything! I believe most outdoor flowers grow in just a few weeks, but I wish there was an useful answer on the web somewhere!

I can not say if I can commit this early in the month, especially since work is still erratic (stupid writers strike).

Chuck, (Hye5), give me a ring during that week and touch base and see where I am at as far as time, maybe we can car pool. Especially since OPEC wants us to spend $4 per gallon for gas.

Thom: Definitely! Also, are you interested in checking out the studio open house referenced in this thread? If you are interested in making this an outing, let me know... it sounds interesting.

Geo, do you know how long poppies take to grow from sprouts to blooms? Do you think the poppies will be in bloom by late March?
03/04/2008 05:29:04 PM · #25
I don't know how long they take but...judging by the way the surrounding hills look like there could be a good chance that they will start blooming in march. The hills are surrounding with green plants that create wildflowers however the buds have not come up yet. So since theres still a few weeks to go till the end of march its a chance
